When The Office spinoff was announced, longtime fans of the popular show were wary of it, owing to the massive expectations set by its predecessor. However, as more details were revealed about The Paper, the wariness turned into cautious excitement.

As the plot details were revealed about the documentary crew following Toledo Truth Tellers, and a familiar face made a comeback in the trailer, fans actually started looking forward to the episode rollout on Peacock. Now, we're hours away from the release, and the streamer adds to the excitement with a major vote of confidence in the form of an early renewal for the second season of the show.

Early critic reviews that have started pouring in for The Paper are also adding to the positivity and excitement around the show's release. The positive review from critics is expressed by the high score for the show on Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregator. At the time of writing, the score, which is subject to change as more reviews come pouring in, is capped at an 86% score with 44 reviews from critics.

Out of the 44 reviews, 38 are positive reviews with a higher than average score, whereas 6 have given a lower than average score to the spinoff. The fact that more than the majority of the reviews have been fairly positive marks for a bright future for the mockumentary.

The show is yet to receive a score on the Popcornmeter, a public review aggregator on Rotten Tomatoes, since it has not yet been released on Peacock. The show was earlier set to roll out in weekly episodes, but the streamer decided to take the bold step and change the premiere to a binge-release fashion and drop all episodes at once.

This decision might be in hopes of eliciting the feel of The Office, which gained most of its audience in the age of streaming, with viewers who binge-watched the show to find a comfort watch. According to these reviews, though, The Paper might share the same DNA with its predecessor but tries to cap the similarities at a thin level instead of trying to replicate them.

The fact that Peacock displayed the vote of confidence in the spinoff does create the possibility for an even greater sophomore season, since all the hype around its predecessor finds its origin in the second season as well.

All 10 episodes of The Paper Season 1 are set to premiere on Peacock on September 4.
