The Paper, which is a spin-off of The Office, is set to be released on 4th September, 2025. Since the show's trailer was released on 7th August 2025, The Office fans have been eager to find out what's new about the spin-off and how it will fare in comparison to the original show.
The Office fans have loved the show even after it last aired in 2013. Thus, much is expected from The Paper. There are a few similarities between the original and the spin-off, and Domhnall Gleeson, who plays Ned Sampson, spoke about the similarities between the two shows.
Domhall Gleeson points out similarities between The Office and The Paper
As a spin-off, The Paper is bound to have some similarities with The Office. Both shows are set in the same universe, just a decade apart. The spin-off follows the same documentary crew from The Office, making a documentary on Toledo Truth-Teller, a recovering newspaper company in Toledo, Ohio. We will be seeing Domhall Gleeson as the new editor-in-chief, who does his best to save the company.
Speaking about the similarities between the two shows, Gleeson said,
''Yeah, sure, I mean, it's the same documentary crew's idea that made it. We've got Oscar along, he was absolutely wonderful in that show, and I think wonderful in ours. And so it does have overlap. What I think, we'll hopefully find a space for people to see us as our own thing, and it may take time, but that's what I'm hoping for.''
The name of the documentary crew that filmed The Office was never revealed, except for one crew member, Brian. As we know from the trailer of The Paper that the same crew is going to make a documentary on the employees of Toledo Truth-Teller. We also see that most employees at the Midwestern newspaper company are amateurs who have never actually written for a paper.
Among them, we see Oscar Martinez, who was an accountant in The Office, and we see him as Head Accountant in the upcoming show. This, as Gleeson points out, is a similarity between the show. Oscar was an essential member of the original show, who faced quite a few complicated situations due to Michael Scott. For fans of the original show, seeing Oscar is a nostalgic moment, and he is already frustrated to see the same crew at yet another company he works for.
Despite having many similarities, The Paper can still have a space of its own if it delivers good episodes and an overall good story. It is also set in an office, with employees who aren't the best at their job, but don't think they need to do better either. But if the characters are well developed with a consistent storyline, the show might just make a space for itself, away from being associated with its predecessor.
The Office is streaming on Peacock. All episodes of The Paper will be released on 4th September 2025 on Peacock.
