It was made available on Disney+ on September 24, 2025, and has one season with a total of four episodes.

Directed by Bryan Andrews and Zeb Wells, the show is part of Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and is Marvel Studios Animation’s first television series with a TV-MA rating.

The series features recognisable MCU cast members, including Elizabeth Olsen, Iman Vellani, Simu Liu, and Hailee Steinfeld, who also play their respective roles in animated form.

Marvel Zombies: Overall opinion of the MCU fans

Marvel Zombies exists within an alternate timeline around five years after the zombie episode of What If…?, roughly around 2023, outside of the primary MCU sacred timeline. The show is a sequel episode giving an outcome of a zombie outbreak that took over numerous Marvel superheroes. Although the series exists within the larger MCU concept of a multiverse, its events do not affect mainline MCU ventures.

Public reactions have been overwhelmingly favorable from viewers for its suspenseful action sequences and original adult animation, but more divided from the critics concerning the depth of the story, pacing of the episode, and voice work. The show itself has received acclaim for gore effects, visual aesthetic, and new character usage while being criticized for a predictable plot structure and uneven emotional attachment.

A Reddit user says:

“I thought it was a pretty good story too. Feels comicy almost, and as an avid zombie super heroes enjoyer it hit every nail on the mark. The only place I can truly see critique is the ending, the rest just seems like power scaling complaints.”

Another user added:

“I enjoyed it. If you’re not a tough critic and can look past some of the dumb stuff. It’s a good watch if you’re expecting anything else it’s like going into Godzilla vs Kong movie and expecting a good story. You watch it for the zombies and the massacre of your favorite heroes/villians.”

A user went on to say:

“It’s a really good concept. Not a huge fan of some of the execution though but overall it’s still pretty cool.”

One user summed up the viewing experience, saying:

“If you try not to nitpick the story too hard and just enjoy the gore + visuals, it’s a fun ride.”

What is Marvel Zombies about?

Marvel Zombies revolves around the survivors who are battling against time in a dystopian setting to discover a cure for the super-powered undead after the Avengers and numerous other heroes perish in a zombie plague. Some of the major MCU cast members, including Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), and Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), provide their voices for the production while adhering to continuity within the animated MCU multiverse.

Set about five years after the animated series What If… Zombies?! episode (approximately 2023 in MCU multiverse time), Marvel Zombies is set within a grim alternate version of the universe wherein a Quantum Realm virus had turned heroes into zombies.

The virus infects the limbic system such that victims become mindless flesh-eaters, with the rare exception that the virus could be treated by Mind Stone power, which differentiates the story from the comics' incurable Hunger Virus.

Audience reception has been overwhelmingly favorable, specifically from MCU fans, who are anticipating a darker, gory animated version of beloved characters. The show has an IMDb score of 7.3/10 from over 4,000 votes.

Critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes sits at around 67%, while the audience score is at 80%. Metacritic gives mixed reviews with 65/100, plus a lukewarm reception from critics.

Fans compliment the suspenseful action scenes, gore effects, original kills, and the horror-comedy mixture. The quality of the animations and voice work also earned praise. Critics, however, point out its shortcomings, such as fluctuating tonality with forced humor at times, slow plot developments, and failed narrative potential. The show does succeed as an enjoyable, fan-serving spin-off, but not as an extremely deep narrative.
