There are two possible futures for The Rainmaker, following its premiere on USA Network on August 15, 2025, to positive reviews. The show is based on John Grisham's novel of the same name. The show's story follows Rudy Baylor, a young lawyer who gets fired from his firm, and ends up working with someone who looks for clients at a disaster site. Things get even more complicated for Baylor when he takes on a wrongful death suit of a black patient's death in hospital care, only to be up against his former employee.
The Rainmaker can either have a definitive ending, much like the novel it is based on, or it can have multiple seasons, given that the story is extended. Milo Callaghan, who plays the protagonist Rudy, spoke with ScreenRant about whether a potential season two will stay faithful to the books.
The Rainmaker's future
The Rainmaker, the television series, is not the only adaptation of the novel. The 1997 film, which starred Matt Damon as Rudy Baylor, was the first adaptation of the novel. Now that a show has been released, we can see a much detailed version of the film.
It is yet to be decided if The Rainmaker will have a second season or not, but Callaghan spoke about the potential future of the show with ScreenRant. When the actor was asked if the story might be stretched out for future seasons, Callaghan said,
''I think that in lots of ways, you just have to watch him find out. But this is always like [our showrunner] Michael Seitzman used to say, this is the coming of age story of Rudy Baylor. I suppose you have to work out where he ends up on that journey towards the end of the series.''
Callaghan continued,
''Is there scope for more? I think there are always amazing conversations to have, and when you have creators like Michael behind a show this, there are incredible ways that it can be taken. Those would be conversations that are ongoing, but we will have more definitively.''
Callaghan's words do not confirm a second season and an extension of the story for a potential future season, but he does say there is a possibility since this is a newer version of the story. Hence, we cannot rule anything out until an official announcement is made. Other than Callaghan, The Rainmaker stars Lana Parrilla as Jocelyn Stone, Madison Iseman as Sarah Plankmore, P.J. Byrne as Deck Shifflet, Dan Fogler as Melvin Pritcher, Robyn Cara as Kelly Riker, Wade Briggs as Brad Noonan, and John Slattery as Leo F. Drummond.
The show is developed by Michael Seitzman & Jason Richman, produced by Adrian Kelly, and executive produced by Julia Cohen, Wendy Mericle, David Gernert, Russell Lee Fine, Jason Richman, Patrick Moran, John Grisham, and Michael Seitzman. The production companies behind the show are Maniac, PKM Productions, Blumhouse Television, and Lionsgate Television.
The Rainmaker episode two comes out on USA Network on 22nd August, and the first episode is streaming on Peacock.
