USA Network is bringing back big-stakes courtroom drama with The Rainmaker, a new legal series based on John Grisham’s bestselling 1995 novel. Set to premiere on August 15, 2025, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, the show stars Milo Callaghan as Rudy Baylor, a fresh-out-of-law-school underdog who finds himself taking on his former boss in a high-profile wrongful death case.

The show also stars John Slattery as powerful attorney Leo Drummond and Madison Iseman as Sarah Plankmore, Rudy’s law school girlfriend who now works for Leo. Lana Parrilla plays Jocelyn “Bruiser” Stone, Rudy’s new boss who operates out of a repurposed taco shop. P.J. Byrne joins the cast as Bruiser’s sketchy paralegal, Deck.

Produced by Lionsgate and Blumhouse Television, the 10-episode first season will stream on Peacock one week after airing. Michael Seitzman serves as showrunner and co-writer alongside Jason Richman, with Grisham, Jason Blum, and David Gernert also on board as executive producers.

The show’s trailer teases a fast-paced legal showdown, personal fallout, and an underdog lawyer who refuses to back down. After years in development, The Rainmaker marks USA Network’s return to original drama with a David-vs-Goliath legal story.

What is The Rainmaker about?

Based on John Grisham’s 1995 novel, The Rainmaker follows Rudy Baylor, a fresh law school graduate played by Milo Callaghan, who’s fired from his prestigious firm on day one and lands at a small, questionable practice led by Lana Parrilla’s “Bruiser.”

With help from a chaotic paralegal and a growing sense of justice, Rudy takes on his former boss, played by John Slattery, in a case involving medical negligence, corruption, and personal betrayal.

The show mixes courtroom tension with emotional stakes, while flashing between past and present to show how Rudy’s career and relationships unravel under pressure. It’s a legal battle with personal costs, framed as a David-versus-Goliath fight inside and outside the courtroom.

What to expect from The Rainmaker?

The Rainmaker isn’t just another legal drama; it’s a pressure-cooker setup where the underdog goes head-to-head with the system. Viewers can expect an intense courtroom showdown between Rudy Baylor, a broke, newly minted lawyer, and his powerful ex-boss, Leo Drummond.

The core story centers on a wrongful death case tied to medical negligence, but it quickly unravels into something deeper involving corporate cover-ups and personal betrayals.

The show leans into character drama as much as legal twists, with Rudy trying to balance his idealism against the murky reality of how the legal world works. Expect explosive confrontations, especially with Madison Iseman’s Sarah, Rudy’s ex, and Leo’s associate, caught in the middle.

Lana Parrilla’s Bruiser brings a chaotic but sharp edge as Rudy’s new boss, adding grit to every scene she’s in. With a flashback structure hinting at how the past shaped Rudy’s present, the show explores ambition, loyalty, and ethics in the face of corruption.

Every episode promises courtroom battles, shady boardroom deals, and cracks forming in personal relationships. The trailer already teased car crashes, betrayals, and shouting matches that break out in and out of court, so don’t expect things to stay calm for long. This case gets personal. Fast.
