The Righteous Gemstones definitely needed to solve the mystery of Aimee-Leigh's death (& it more than bothers me how it all ended for her)

I have been an ardent fan of The Righteous Gemstones throughout its four-season run. However, despite the highs and the lows of the show, there's one persistent mystery that The Righteous Gemstones didn't quite fully explain by the end of the fourth season. I was hoping that the enduring mystery regarding Aimee-Leigh Gemstone's death might be explained by the showrunners of The Righteous Gemstones, but to no avail. Although it was explained that Aimee-Leigh passed away after succumbing to an illness, this is too vague and convenient an explanation for such a show.

Here's everything that you need to know.

Aimee-Leigh was consistently referred to throughout The Righteous Gemstones

Although she died a year before the premiere of The Righteous Gemstones, Aimee-Leigh was constantly referred to throughout the four seasons of the show and remained somewhat of a driving force. Despite her legacy and influence being persistent, Danny McBride chose to have her present in person only in the famous Interlude episodes and other similar flashbacks. She also appeared as a ghost in front of Kelvin in one such instance.

Aimee-Leigh's death was portrayed in a quaint fashion during the first season finale, when the rest of the family was seen gathered around her deathbed. It seemed to me as if she had been ill for quite a while and that the family was mentally preparing itself for her demise. Nevertheless, I could never work out the exact reason behind her demise, or the nature of the strange illness. In retrospect, it does appear to me that her death was, by itself, a pivotal incident in the world of The Righteous Gemstones, and the way each of the other characters came to terms with it drove the show forward. In this light, it does seem justified that the exact cause of her death was left to speculation.

Jennifer Nettles opens up about her character on The Righteous Gemstones

Actress Jennifer Nettles, who played the character of Aimee-Leigh Gemstone on The Righteous Gemstones, is a celebrated Country musician apart from being an actress. In a past interview with GoldDerby, Nettles spoke at length about her character and her experience of collaborating with her co-stars. Reflecting on her character and Danny McBride's contribution to the show, Nettles remarked:

"I call him the godfather of southern storytelling in TV and film. Aimee-Leigh is pretty natural to me, once I tapped into my Southern Baptist roots."

Nettles further explained the significance of the Interlude episodes:

"They were realizing that they wanted to add in a little diversity, that they wanted to veer off from the direct story line and offer a little backstory of how this family came to be, because in addition to this being obviously a story that has commentary on religion, it has commentary on hypocrisy, it has so much — it's also a story of family. That's the biggest context. Aimee-Leigh was their rock and is definitely the most sympathetic."
