Prime Video's The Rings of Power was officially renewed for its third season in February 2025, and according to reports, it has already begun production for it. The second season of the fantasy series ended with some cliffhangers, so it's great news that the third season is going into production.
The Rings of Power, adapted from Tolkien's Middle-earth:
"Set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, this epic drama follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth."
Here's everything we know about the upcoming third season.
Prime Video's The Rings of Power Season 3 gets a major production update

The Rings of Power Season 2 ended with a dramatic standoff with the elves and dwarves standing in opposition to the dark lord. The ending wrapped up a lot of the plotlines that had been set up in the first season (Grand Elf reads quite similar to Gandalf) while creating even more that will be explored in the third season.
According to Prime Video, the third season will be set many years after the events of The Rings of Power Season 2:
"Jumping forward several years from the events of season 2, season 3 takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last."
The Rings of Power Season 2 was released almost two years after the first season, owing to the elaborate production process and VFX work involved in a series of this scale. Considering this and the production update, there is a chance that the third season, set to be bigger than the previous season and chronicle the war at its height, might take the same amount of time, bringing the Season 3 release to 2026.
Co-showrunners Patrick McKay and JD Payne have previously revealed plans for five seasons for The Rings of Power and the infrastructure that they've built, corresponding to the five seasons:
"We’re building infrastructure for five seasons. We’re building a small city. We were always going to spend what we needed to spend to get it right"
Prime Video has also revealed three directors for the upcoming season: Sanaa Hamri, Charlotte Brändström, and Stefan Schwartz. Showrunners McKay and Payne return for the third season.
Additionally, most of the actors will be reprising their roles in Season 3, except, of course, the ones who died, like Celebrimbor, Adar, Valandil, and Mirdania. Season 3 is also welcoming a few newcomers within its ranks, such as Zubin Varla, Adam Young, Jamie Campbell Bower, and Eddie Marsan.
Even though there have been no official announcements regarding the exact events that Season 3 will be covering, it might be safe to assume that Sauron might be finding his way back to Númenor with Pharazôn as his next target.
Only time will tell if Pharazôn will suffer Galadriel's fate or Celebrimbor's fate as Sauron seeks to make the One Ring.
