The Rookie has become one of the most popular shows on ABC over the years. The show has so far aired seven seasons, telling the story of John Nolan, a man who becomes the oldest rookie in the Los Angeles Police Department by joining the force in his 40s.
Though Nolan is not a rookie anymore after seven years of service, the show has still managed to keep the audience hooked with fresh cases every season. The seventh season concluded recently, and ended on a high note as Oscar escaped from prison and exposed the fact that Monica had been helping him out.
The cliffhanger has left the audience waiting for The Rookie Season 8, and people are wondering if the police procedural drama has been renewed. Fortunately, an eighth season has already been announced by ABC, so get ready for Nolan and his team’s return to television.
The renewal status and potential release date of The Rookie Season 8
The Rookie Season 8 was confirmed by ABC in April 2025, while the seventh season was still on-air. The show was announced to be a part of the network’s 2025-2026 broadcast schedule. However, fans might be slightly disappointed to know that the series is not getting a Fall premiere this year.
Instead, ABC has confirmed that The Rookie Season 8 will premiere in the mid-season schedule, unlike most other dramas. A similar trend was followed for the seventh installment as well, which debuted in January 2025 instead of the conventional September-October release.
ABC has decided on a delayed premiere as it leads to fewer breaks between episodes. The show keeps momentum, which has proved to be beneficial for the viewership ratings so far. Hence, the next season of the series is expected to premiere in January 2026. So, we still have to endure an eight-month-long break to see further adventures of the LAPD.
The storyline of The Rookie Season 8
In an interview with ScreenRant, showrunner Alexi Hawley has confirmed that the upcoming season will follow up on the events of the previous season’s finale and will build up on the storyline of Monica’s immunity deal:
“I think heading into season eight, it's going to be the frustration of the fact that she [Monica] got away with it, and also, potentially, what are the aspects of the immunity deal that could give us story to tell, which I think is partly what we're trying to figure out right now in the room.”
Hawley added that the officers will be enraged by the deal, and it will be frustrating for them to handle its consequences:
“I do think that it's enraging and many other things to our cops who have been trying to get her for a full season now, and the fact that she's now untouchable for her past crimes is really incredibly frustrating.”
As for the cast, so far, no main members have announced their exit from the show. So, they are expected to reprise their roles in The Rookie Season 8. These include Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, Melissa O'Neil as Lucy Chen, and Alyssa Diaz as Angela Lopez.
The cast also includes Eric Winter as Tim Bradford, Richard T. Jones as Wade Grey, Mekia Cox as Nyla Harper, Lisseth Chavez as Celina Juarez, Jenna Dewan as Bailey Nune, and Shawn Ashmore as Wesley Evers.
