Captain Zoe Andersen first appeared in the pilot episode as the commanding officer of the Mid-Wilshire Division. A former Marine and Pentagon Police officer, she brought discipline, authority, and compassion to the LAPD. She saw potential in John Nolan, the oldest rookie in the department, and personally requested him for her squad. This made her a trusted mentor figure, not only to Nolan but also to the audience.

However, she met her tragic end in Season 1, Episode 16, Greenlight. The plot placed her and Nolan in grave danger after a confrontation with Cole Midas and his gang. Both officers were lured and captured.

Anderson cleverly tried to manipulate and instigate Midas into letting them go. However, Midas kicked her into the pool, and while Nolan urged the members to rescue her, she was able to free herself underwater. She rose and bravely faced the gang members until Cole Midas shot her, and the bullet hit her neck. The scene was devastating, and Nolan tried to save her and pulled her out of the pool and performed CPR, but the wound was fatal. As the forces arrived, Nolan said,

"It was Cole."

As the officers paid their respects to Captain Zoe Andersen, Nolan uttered,

"I am so sorry."
