The Sandman is about Morpheus, who is the Lord of dreams. As such, he has many helpers and always has a raven, who accompanies him. Previously, Morpheus had Jessamy, who used to always be with him, even when Morpheus was trapped. However, Jessamy gets shot and killed before she can help Morpheus escape. Therefore, Matthew becomes Morpheus’ next raven. It is Lucienne who sends Matthew to the Waking World, so that he can help and be a companion of the Lord of Dreams. While Matthew is confused about his new job, he is still eager to help. On the other hand, however, Morpheus is still shaken by what happened to his trusted companion, Jessamy, and he does not build a bond with Matthew. Even though the raven wants to help him, Morpheus keeps the raven at a distance from him and often tries to get him to leave him. Therefore, Morpheus proves that there are times when he can get quite ruthless in The Sandman.

2. He dismisses Lucienne’s help and advice

Another instance where Morpheus behaves ruthlessly and in a cold manner in The Sandman is when he ignores the helpful advice of Lucienne. Morpheus is the Lord of dreams and he therefore believes that he knows the realm of Dreaming better than anyone else. Morpheus thinks that only he can know about dreams and nobody else. Therefore, when Lucienne informs him about the Sleeping Sickness caused by his absence, Morpheus does not take heed. Morpheus wanted to deal with the escaped nightmare Gault, who wanted to become a dream, and Lucienne was not comfortable with the idea. While Morpheus was grateful for all the help and care that Lucienne had put into things while he was away, he still believes that there is no one else who can rule the realm of Dreaming as he can, even though Lucienne has proven in various instances that she knows more about things than Morpheus. Therefore, The Sandman showcases how Morpheus often ignores other’s advice.

3. Morpheus punished Alex Burgess with eternal sleep

The Sandman is an intriguing fantasy drama and has many layers to it. When Roderick Burgess wanted to capture Death so that he could have eternal life, he mistakenly trapped Death’s brother instead, who was Morpheus. Therefore, when Roderick dies, his son Alex becomes Morpheus’ jailer and makes him suffer for years. Therefore, when Morpheus is finally free, he wants to get immediate revenge on Alex for all those years of torture that he had to go through. Morpheus initially took the form of a cat and then confronted Alex and asked him if he had any idea how his decision to keep Morpheus jailed had created chaos and damage in Morpheus’ world. Morpheus then decides to punish Alex by giving him the gift of eternal sleep, where he is still alive, but will always be in bed and will always stay asleep. Therefore, this instance proves that The Sandman can be ruthless and powerful when he wants.

4. Morpheus imprisoned Nada in Hell

There are many layers of storytelling in The Sandman and there is one instance where viewers get to see a different side of Morpheus. During an instance, Morpheus goes to Hell to retrieve his helmet. When he passes a woman in a prison cell, he takes on a different form as she views him and calls him Kai’ckul, while he calls her Nada. There is a history that goes back several thousand years as Nada had rejected Morpheus’ love. Nada’s pain at the sight of him makes her emotional and she mentions that only Morpheus’ forgiveness can truly free her. While Morpheus has feelings for her, he still keeps her bound in Hell and does not forgive her. Therefore, this is another instance in The Sandman where Morpheus is ruthless in the way he exercises his powers.

5. Morpheus killed his own son, Orpheus

One of the most ruthless acts that Morpheus commits in The Sandman is when he kills his own son, Orpheus. While Orpheus has lived for centuries as a disembodied head and has begged for death, Morpheus has often denied his wish. However, this time, he accepts, and it is not mercy killing. The whole act is not done out of compassion and there is a deeper meaning and ruthlessness behind it. Dream had banished Orpheus for centuries, refusing to help him retrieve Eurydice or end his cursed life. He therefore punished his son for his disobedience and prioritized his rigid sense of rules over paternal love. When Morpheus finally agrees to Orpheus’ wish of being dead, it is done in the context of needing to atone and move forward and not out of mercy. Therefore, the willingness by Morpheus to destroy his own blood, makes him one of the most ruthless characters in The Sandman.

6. Morpheus banished Gault to darkness

Another reason why Morpheus is ruthless in The Sandman is because he is also impulsive and arrogant. When Morpheus was absent from the Dreaming, the nightmare Gault made her home in the dreams of Jed Walker, which enabled him to act out his superhero fantasies and escape his abusive waking life. However, when Morpheus returns, he brings back Gault to the Dreaming and is even angry with her for trying to rule her own dream kingdom through Jed. Even though Gault insists that she only wants to help Jed and she has outgrown her role as the nightmare, Morpheus does not listen to her and uses all his power to send Gault into the darkness. However, he brings her back as a dream when he reconsiders his decision. Another incident where Morpheus uses his power to be cold toward people in The Sandman.

7. Gregory’s life was drained to re-empower Morpheus

One of the first ruthless incidents in The Sandman that marks Morpheus’s reign is when he comes back from imprisonment to Dreaming and is in a weakened state. Even though Dreaming is his place of power, it is crumbling and needs repair. Therefore, to become stronger, Morpheus needs to get some of his power back. When he goes to meet Cain and Abel, who are the residents of the Dreaming and have stayed there since Morpheus was absent, he notices Gregory, who is the gargoyle that Morpheus had created and had become like a pet for the two brothers. Morpheus decides to gain some of his power back through Gregory and he unmakes him and re-absorbs him. This is ruthless and cold-hearted as the brothers, Cain and Abel, are heartbroken, and the poor animal is destroyed to cater to Morpheus’ whims. Another instance in The Sandman, where Morpheus does not care about others and acts selfishly.

8. Morpheus took away Lyta’s husband and then claimed her child

Another brutal manner in which Morpheus acts ruthlessly in The Sandman is when he destroys the love between a couple and even lays claim to their child. In the series, Lyta Hall helps Rose in the Waking world and she also has a life with her deceased husband Hector in the Dreaming. Her dreams become so powerful that she becomes pregnant with Hector’s child in reality. However, Morpheus tells Lyta that Hector is a ghost, and with a wave of his hand, he makes Hector disappear. Lyta is devastated to witness all this but Morpheus increases her troubles when he states that since the child was conceived in the Dreaming, the child belongs to Morpheus and he will come back one day to take him away. Therefore, The Sandman proves that he has no empathy for anyone and only cares about his own selfish desires and needs to get powerful.

9. Rose Walker was nearly killed by Morpheus

While Morpheus does not pose a threat to the mortals, he still causes problems for Rose in The Sandman. Morpheus is often benevolent towards mortals as the Dreaming is a place for them and he only goes to the Waking world when he has to restore order. Therefore, mortals don’t have any threat from Morpheus but there was a time when Rose Walker nearly died because of Morpheus. Rose was in a dream vortex and she walked through the dreams of others and caused a lot of unwitting damage. Morpheus began to believe that only by killing Rose, could he close the vortex that had been created. However, Rose’s great-grandmother, Unity Kinkaid, came at the last moment and took on the dream vortex herself, and died in the place of Rose. Therefore, while Morpheus did not want to kill Rose, yet he had to do so and would have easily done it, if Rose’s great-grandmother had not come in between to sacrifice on her behalf. The Sandman proves that he can go to any limit to protect his realm.

10. Morpheus drove Richard Madoc insane with an overwhelming amount of ideas

The Sandman is a series that deals with the otherworldly and the relationship between humans and interdimensional beings. Therefore, when a writer, Erasmus Fry, captures the muse Calliope, to use her for giving him ideas and therefore success and fame, he decides to hand over Calliope to Richard Madoc, who also enjoys a lot of success at the hands of the muse. However, Calliope is the ex-wife of Morpheus and she calls out to him to rescue her. While Morpheus goes on a noble mission, he does become ruthless. Morpheus visits Madoc, who does not want to give away Calliope. Therefore, Morpheus gives Madoc a lot of ideas in abundance and they all come to him so quickly that he goes insane and he even uses his own blood to write them out as his pen ran out of ink. Therefore, this is another instance where Morpheus takes his punishments to another level in The Sandman.
