Netflix has unveiled the first official pictures of Destruction, one of the most eagerly awaited new characters in The Sandman Season 2. The show, adapted from Neil Gaiman's award-winning comic, will bring Destruction aboard as part of the augmented cast for the final season. Barry Sloane portrays Destruction, joining the back Endless siblings alongside some new additions.
The Sandman Season 2 will be streaming in two volumes, with Volume 1 debuting on July 3, 2025, and Volume 2 a week later on July 24, 2025. Entertainment Weekly has the first look, which includes Jack Gleeson as Puck, another major casting addition.
The narrative will be drawing on large storylines from the comics, such as "Season of Mists" and "Brief Lives," to bring Destruction's complicated storyline to television for the first time. Showrunner Allan Heinberg has confirmed that a lot of Destruction's dialogue has been lifted directly from the comics, guaranteeing an accurate representation that fans have been waiting for since the show's premiere.
Destruction's debut: First photos and casting
The first photos of Barry Sloane as Destruction reveal the character's unique presence among the Endless. Destruction, or the Prodigal, is the brother who left his realm and duties years ago. Sloane's characterization is intended to convey both the character's strength and his inner turmoil.
Showrunner Allan Heinberg explained that Sloane adds a "lightness of touch" and a sense of humanity to the character, in line with Destruction's comic book characterization as a soul torn in two, one who wishes to create instead of destroy.
The first glimpse also features Jack Gleeson playing Puck, a shape-shifting character in Celtic lore, and the expanded scope of The Sandman Season 2. Gleeson's Puck will feature in the retelling of "A Midsummer Night's Dream," a one-shot comic book story about the origins of Shakespeare's play.
New and returning cast members
The Sandman Season 2 features Tom Sturridge reprising his role as Dream, with series regulars including Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Mason Alexander Park, and Gwendoline Christie.
Adrian Lester joins the cast as Destiny, Esmé Creed-Miles as Delirium, Laurence O'Fuarain as Thor, Freddie Fox as Loki, Clive Russell as Odin, Ruairi O'Connor as Orpheus, and Steve Coogan voicing Barnabas the dog. The expansion of the cast mirrors the wider story arcs being translated from the comic books, particularly those concerning the surviving Endless siblings.
Plotlines and structure of The Sandman Season 2
Netflix has announced that The Sandman Season 2 will be divided into two volumes. Volume 1, which will be released on July 3, 2025, will have six episodes and cover the "Season of Mists" storyline, when Lucifer departs Hell and passes on the key to Morpheus.
Volume 2, which will be released on July 24, 2025, will consist of five episodes and tackle "The Kindly Ones" and "The Wake." The "Brief Lives" narrative, in which Dream and Delirium seek out Destruction, will also be picked up, with Destruction's storyline as the fulcrum of the season.
Pursuant to the official synopsis, Dream has to confront the ramifications of what he did in the past, save his kingdom, and encounter gods, monsters, and mortals. The Endless siblings' reunion and Dream's path toward forgiveness are major themes for the last season.
The importance of Destruction's introduction
Destruction's introduction is a turning point for the series. Destruction, in the comics, is a peacemaker who denies his role of destruction and instead creates and exists within the world.
His physical absence from the family has a lasting impact on the Endless and forms the structure of "Brief Lives." Introducing the character to the screen enables the series to have new philosophical themes around responsibility, transformation, and the nature of power.
