The Sandman Season 2 Vol. 1 is now streaming on Netflix. Across six episodes, the series continues following Dream (also known as Morpheus), a member of the Endless, as he reconnects with family, faces the impact of past actions, and fulfills a promise that carries heavy consequences.

The story includes events from multiple timelines, dream realms, and mythological narratives. Major characters introduced in this volume include Dream’s siblings, Destruction and Delirium, as well as his son, Orpheus. Viewers also see the return of characters like Nada, Lucifer, and Johanna Constantine, and the arrival of gods such as Odin and Thor.

The Sandman Season 2 Vol. 1 covers multiple storylines from Neil Gaiman’s comic arcs and builds toward a dramatic final choice made by Dream.

Dream meets his siblings and addresses his past with Nada in The Sandman Season 2 Vol. 1

In the early episodes of The Sandman Season 2 Vol. 1, Dream appears with several of his Endless siblings, including Death, Desire, Delirium, Despair, and Destiny. These meetings led him to revisit an old decision—his punishment of Nada, a mortal queen with whom he once fell in love.

Thousands of years earlier, Nada rejected Dream after learning of the destruction his presence brought to her people. In anger, Dream condemned her to Hell. In the present timeline, Dream goes to retrieve Nada from her imprisonment. However, Lucifer has vacated the throne of Hell and given Dream its key. Several beings, including Odin, Thor, Loki, and others, make offers to rule Hell.

Dream chooses Heaven to take control of Hell. Once control is restored, Nada is released. She asks Dream to leave her alone, requesting to live as a human again. Dream agrees, although he later visits her again, going against her request.

Dream travels with Delirium in search of Destruction

Following the events with Nada and Hell, Dream travels with his younger sister, Delirium, to locate their missing brother, Destruction. He had left his realm 300 years ago and had not been seen since.

During their journey, Delirium expresses confusion over why Destruction left, and Dream begins to reflect on his own actions across the ages. Their travels eventually bring them to the location of Orpheus, Dream’s son, whom he had not visited for many centuries. Orpheus lives as a disembodied head on a remote island, cared for by a group of priests.

To find Destruction, Dream needs Orpheus’ help. In return, Orpheus asks for the one thing Dream had once refused to grant—death.

The story of Orpheus is revealed

Orpheus is shown to be Dream’s son with the muse Calliope. The Sandman Season 2 Vol. 1 provides details about how Orpheus lost his body. After the death of his wife, Eurydice, who was bitten by a snake on their wedding day, Orpheus tried to bring her back from the Underworld.

He entered a deal with his aunt, Death, who made him immortal so he could cross into the realm of Hades and Persephone. But he failed to save Eurydice. In grief, Orpheus approached a cult of Dionysus. They dismembered him, but his head survived. Dream visited Orpheus once after this but refused to kill him, as the Endless are forbidden from spilling family blood.

Now, Orpheus tells Dream he will help him find Destruction, but only if Dream grants him death in return. Dream agrees.

Destruction is found

With Orpheus’ help, Dream and Delirium find Destruction living in a quiet villa near Orpheus’ temple. Destruction lives alone, with only his talking dog Barnabas (voiced by Steve Coogan) for company. He explains that he left his realm because he no longer believed in the purpose of his role. He could not continue to be responsible for destruction across the universe.

Destruction declines to return with his siblings and announces his intention to leave this world entirely. Before leaving, he speaks to Dream about love being the only meaningful reason to act. He tells Dream to remember that he left not from hatred, but from care for others.

Dream fulfills his promise to Orpheus

Dream returns to Orpheus and keeps his word. He ends Orpheus’ immortal life by piercing his son’s eyes with his fingers. The moment is quiet and final. It is the first time Dream is shown crying in the series.

Although Orpheus requested this ending, Dream’s act still breaks the laws of the Endless. Killing a family member is forbidden, regardless of the reason. The act also triggers consequences in the realm of the Furies.

The Furies notice Dream’s crime

After Dream kills Orpheus, the three goddesses known as the Kindly Ones (or the Furies) become aware of the event. These figures—also called the Mother, the Maiden, and the Crone—represent vengeance and justice. They watch Dream from a distance and express concern that a new ancient conflict may be starting.

They argue about whether to punish Dream. One of them cuts a thread, symbolizing the beginning of something final. Dream is shown alone in his realm, grieving the loss of his son. This marks a turning point in his story, and the consequences of this choice are likely to unfold in The Sandman Season 2 Vol. 2.

Other characters and subplots in The Sandman Season 2 Vol. 1

Throughout The Sandman Season 2 Vol. 1, other characters appear with their own storylines. Johanna Constantine returns, first seen in a clip where she confronts Dream while investigating strange activity. Jenna Coleman plays both the present-day Johanna and her ancestor Lady Johanna Constantine.

Lucifer Morningstar, played by Gwendoline Christie, gives up ruling Hell and exits the main storyline after handing over its key to Dream. Other divine figures—including Norse gods and mythical rulers—try to take over Hell, but Dream returns the control to Heaven instead.

Desire and Despair continue their quiet manipulation from the background, with Desire still focused on interfering with Dream’s life. Death offers guidance to multiple characters, including Orpheus.

The Sandman Season 2 Vol. 1 ends with Dream grieving alone while unseen forces begin to prepare a response to his actions. The next volume will explore the consequences of his decision and the final stages of his story.

The Sandman Season 2 Vol. 2 airs on July 24 on Netflix.
