**Disclaimer: This article contains major spoilers for The Sandman Season 2 Volume 2. Reader discretion is advised.**
Netflix's The Sandman Season 2 finally released its Volume 2, which saw the inevitable and tragic conclusion to Morpheus' tale. Unable to escape the Furies' wrath and the consequences of his actions (he killed his son in Volume 1), Morpheus was eventually taken away by the Fates.
The Season 2 finale saw Daniel Hall become the new King of Dreaming, preserving the essence and memories of Morpheus. While Dream died, he was able to preserve his realm, which made all the difference in the end.
After Dream's funeral, The Sandman Season 2 Volume 2 featured a post-credits scene with the Kindly Ones, where they read poetry (from Neil Gaiman’s original comic book). The poetry served as the perfect end to Dream's saga and helped reiterate the cyclic nature of birth and rebirth/death in the show.
More on this in our story.
The Sandman Season 2 Volume 2 post-credits scene: Decoding the Kindly Ones' return
After all was said and done in The Sandman Season 2 Volume 2, we catch up with the Kindly Ones, ie, the Fates, in their home, who read a cryptic poetry which serves as the larger theme of Season 2 and gives a bittersweet yet realistic end to Dream's tale.
The post-credits scene was highly reminiscent of the final scene in Volume 1, where the Maiden, the Mother, and the Crone cut Morpheus’ thread, which was different from the rest of his Endless siblings and prophesied about his impending death. While the prophecy seemed hollow at that time, since Dream was an immortal, the scene came full circle, teaching the intertwined relationship between destiny and actions.
While The Sandman Season 2 Volume 2 concluded with Morpheus' tragic fate, the Fates discussed how Death is a common occurrence for them. However, this time, it was surely different as it was the King of Dreaming himself.
The Sandman Season 2 Volume 2 post-credits scene justified Dream's fate
While the Fates did not talk much about Dream in The Sandman Season 2 Volume 2 post-credits scene, their conversation and cryptic poetry justified his end. Their conversation reiterated an important truth- while we all have the same beginning and end, our actions in between are the deciding factors and determine our ends.
While Dream was an Endless being, he chose to be different than his siblings and channeled his emotional side in Season 2. He certainly committed the ultimate sin of filicide, spilling family blood and killing Orpheus, but that was ultimately what his son wanted. After being estranged from him for many years, he killed him in the end, experiencing the pain of losing someone close in the process.
Dream underwent drastic changes in Volume 2, and his sacrifices for his son and even Hippolyta Hall made all the difference in the end. The Fates' conversation suggested that while Dream died just like all other Mortals, his memories and legacy will continue with Daniel Hall because of his selfless actions throughout his life.
The Sandman Season 2 Volume 2 post-credits scene: Explaining Lyta's bittersweet ending
In addition to Dream, The Sandman Season 2 Volume 2 post-credits scene is also important to understand Lyta's ending and the lessons it teaches us. While she was aware that Dream was not entirely responsible for her son's disappearance, she became adamant on seeking revenge from him, which made her a vessel for the Furies to use.
Her naivety in thinking that revenge on Morpheus would bring her son back made her a means for the Furies to exact revenge on Morpheus and fulfill their purpose. However, the Fates' second poetry featured blooming flowers that would eventually die, which was symbolic of Daniel Hall.
Just like a blooming flower withers by night, Daniel Hall was plucked from his mother's arms and made the King of Dreaming. While the death of his youth was painful for Lyta, it also symbolized his new beginning as the King of Dreaming.
This cycle of birth and rebirth might have given Lyta her revenge on Morpheus, but she was unable to reunite with her son, who eventually became the new Morpheus.
