Plot of The Savant

The main action concerns Jodi Goodwin, a female agent who performs in the undercover capacity of "The Savant." Her tasks are to go undercover with extremist groups on the internet, becoming a member of dangerous virtual communities to gather information on possible schemes for mass violence before they can be executed.

Although her activities are critical to national security, there is a cost to it, that being the strain it causes family life. The show is inspired by journalist Andrea Stanley's 2019 Cosmopolitan article "Is It Possible to Stop a Mass Shooting Before It Happens?".

The article had included an actual operative, "K", who had been working with extremist networks online to counter attacks. This real-life backdrop gives a touch of realism to the make-believe series, giving the series a strong mix of fact and fiction.

Cast and characters

The cast features a combination of award-winning and supporting players:

  • Jessica Chastain as Jodi Goodwin, aka "The Savant." She is an undercover mother and suburban agent

Creative team

The Savant has been crafted by a highly talented creative team. The executive producer, writer, and showrunner is Melissa James Gibson. Gibson has worked on House of Cards and The Americans, both of which navigated political positioning and inner turmoil, talents that will work in the world of The Savant.

Direction is by Matthew Heineman, arguably the best-known documentary director from Cartel Land. The series is one of his forays into scripted television, though his background in filming perilous real-life occurrences echoes very strongly through the tone of the series.

Executive producers are Jessica Chastain, Kelly Carmichael, Alan Poul, David Levine, Garrett Kemble, and Jessica Giles. Journalist Andrea Stanley, whose article instigated the series, is also a consultant.
