The series is inspired by a real event where a marine and former police officer infiltrated online hate groups to stop acts of violence. Meanwhile, she struggled to keep her identity a secret to protect herself and her family from danger and threats.

The incident was the subject of a 2019 Cosmopolitan article, Is It Possible to Stop a Mass Shooting Before It Happens?, written by Andrea Stanley. The official logline of the show by Apple TV+ reads:

The tense and high-stakes thriller follows an undercover investigator known as “The Savant” as she infiltrates online hate groups in an effort to stop domestic extremists before they act.”

The series stars Jessica Chastain in the lead role of Jodi Goodwin. She is joined by Nnamdi Asomugha as Charlie Goodwin and Pablo Schreiber as Jason. The rest of the cast includes Jordana Spiro as Amber, Toussaint Francois Battiste as Ryan Goodwin, Cole Doman as Steve Dunicki, and Trinity Lee Shirley as Maeve Goodwin. Talking about the challenges of playing Jodi in The Savant, Chastain said in an interview with the Television Academy:

“The idea that every single day this woman is pretending to be a hate-filled, homophobic, racist, sexist, anti-Semitic, Islamophobic a-hole, looking at so many images that are really harmful and destructive and having to write such things — how do you prevent that from taking over who you are? That was the most interesting thing to explore about the character.”

Chastain also serves as an executive producer on the project along with series creator Melissa James Gibson, Matthew Heineman, Jessica Giles, Alan Poul, Kelly Carmichael, David Levine, and Garrett Kemble.
