Episode five of It: Welcome to Derry on HBO Max hits with one of the show’s most upsetting reveals so far, and it circles right back to the boy whose disappearance kicked the whole story into motion. The mystery around Matty Clements, played by Miles Ekhardt, finally cracks open, and the result is brutal.
The episode begins with Matty appearing shaken, traumatized, and desperate for safety after escaping Pennywise, played by Bill Skarsgård. The new group of kids who have slowly become a modern day Losers’ Club are the first to find him.The other kids stumble on him in their hideout. Relief hits them first, but it shifts fast once Matty begins describing Pennywise’s lair. He reveals that Phil is still alive somewhere inside it. That claim is enough to convince the kids they have to go down into the sewers themselves. Matty reluctantly agrees to guide them, and that's when the twist hits.
Matty never escaped. He died. The version of him they followed was Pennywise in disguise, manipulating their hope to pull them deeper underground. The kids manage to get out alive, but the betrayal leaves a sting that hangs over the rest of the episode.
However, an even more surprising twist is that this storyline was not supposed to be in the show at all. It was supposed to be in the movies. Showrunner Jason Fuchs revealed in a chat with Decider that this was the core ides for It: Chapter Two and the adult Losers would have discovered Mike Hanlon's corpse this way. It was later scrapped off because it stretched too far away from the original novel.
Speaking about it, Fuchs told the outlet,
“We thought, ‘Oh, it’s just too much of a departure from the book. We want to be closer to where the story beats.’ And so that went away. Then when we started talking about the journey of the show, and specifically Episode 5, I remember us talking and going, ‘Wait, this is an idea that might actually have found its time and its moment.’ Matty as the guide, Matty in that context, makes a lot more sense.”
