Although The Simpsons has never considered continuity a serious matter for its show, it definitely knows how to hit an emotional bone, particularly with Lisa Simpson. During season 36's finale, the animated show was more than a parody of popular culture nostalgia and a glimpse into the ever-evolving future. It subtly resurrected a storyline that has been dormant for years: Lisa's relationship with Valerie, her college roommate and love interest.
This episode, “Estranger Things,” encapsulated those feelings alongside Springfield's antics, such as Marge’s death, and the Simpson family’s surreal future paths. But what really captured the attention was what didn’t unfold. Lisa did not end up with Milhouse. She did not end up with Nelson. That change, however, made all the difference.
By linking Lisa’s fate to the boys of her formative years, Lisa’s childhood character had ample opportunity to explore a storyline from season 29 that was presumed lost. One that suggested that restraining Lisa’s future would consist of more than the old associations of Springfield, and perhaps someone new entirely.
Come season 37, the Lisa possibilities the show hints at with this succinct yet potent narrative might just be what the series and the character Lisa need for a revitalization.
Lisa and Valerie’s bond still holds promise

Season 29’s “Mr. Lisa’s Opus” is one of the few episodes where viewers get an insight into Lisa’s life after high school. The episode chronicled her emotional journey to Harvard, as well as the self-doubt and pressure to succeed she faced along the way. It culminated with her meeting her roommate, Valerie, voiced by Kat Dennings. There was an exchange of deep and touching silence between the two, one that suggested some romantic attraction.
This was the first time The Simpsons had Lisa consider a female partner. Unlike her numerous boyfriends from earlier seasons, like Milhouse, Nelson, or even Colin from The Simpsons Movie, Valerie was different. She wasn’t part of Lisa’s Springfield life; she represented something different. But after that episode, the storyline was dropped—until now.
The Simpsons Season 37 has the chance to give Lisa her most meaningful future yet

Although Valerie only showed up for a brief time, her impression was the most memorable one. She, like Lisa, was intelligent, neurotic, and ambitious. The two instantly bonded, and even in a short montage, their dynamic felt genuine and optimistic. This is why the decision in the season 36 finale to let Lisa out of her standard romantic entanglements was so striking—it paves the way for Valerie’s comeback and further exploration of how Lisa’s life could be beyond Springfield.
Throughout the years, The Simpsons has brought back many one-off characters, some even from decades ago, so it wouldn’t be surprising to think Valerie could return. Giving Lisa a more personal, progressive, and independent storyline can rekindle the show's upcoming episodes.
Though many losses and changes were incorporated into season 36, one of the more hopeful thoughts at the end of the season is that Lisa’s best days are still ahead of her with someone new by her side.
