The Summer I Turned Pretty is a popular coming-of-age drama based on the bestselling book series by Jenny Han.

The Amazon Prime Video series is approaching a highly anticipated series finale with its third season (Episode 11) and is set to release on Wednesday, September 17, 2025.

Episode 10, titled Last Year, was released yesterday and has sparked new speculation among fans and critics about Jeremiah Fisher's (Gavin Casalegno) romantic future.

Jeremiah has been navigating a turbulent emotional and personal journey since his broken engagement with Belly (Lola Tung). Now, his unexpected, emotionally vulnerable conversation with Denise Russo (Isabella Briggs) has turned into one of the highlights of this most recent episode, indicating that the show might take a different direction from the books.

Denise, who was merely a minor character in the books, has added an emotional touch to the younger Fisher brother's story. Their friendship appears to offer Jeremiah comfort and empathy, allowing the series to explore personal closure for the characters. Denise and Jeremiah may get together as their friendship evolves into something more.

Simultaneously, it leaves Belly and Conrad’s (Christopher Briney) romance to find its own conclusion. With the finale approaching, the viewers are now guessing whether Jeremiah and Denise can be the show’s fresh version of a romantic solution for Jeremiah.

Episode 10 of The Summer I Turned Pretty is a breakthrough for Jeremiah, who is maneuvering life following the breakup with Belly. Jeremiah is in a precarious situation, both emotionally and practically. His father cut him off financially to teach him a lesson, and now he is stumbling along the couches of friends who are no longer able to finance him.

Here is where Denise comes into the picture as someone to lean on and as someone to relate with.

The chemistry between Jeremiah and Denise in Last Year is obvious. Denise helps him in the healing process and advises him to forgive himself and move on. Her simple and goal-oriented character suits the impulsive and emotional character of Jeremiah.

During the Christmas celebrations, Denise invites Jeremiah to join her family, a move that highlights that their relationship has the potential to grow romantically. This development transforms Denise into one of the key figures in Jeremiah's storyline, which is another narrative twist to The Summer I Turned Pretty.

The book trilogy differs in this aspect because Jeremiah has an ambiguous romantic future, and Belly and Conrad are the main focus. Denise is only a minor character in the novels, as she is just the wedding planner for Belly and Jeremiah’s marriage.

However, the series has expanded her role, helping Jeremiah develop emotionally and recover. This change appeals to modern viewers by offering a compelling dramatic story and keeping their interest.

The show offers a new solution by pairing Jeremiah and Denise. It enables him to forget about the past and the complicated emotions about Belly and Conrad.

Meanwhile, Belly does not have to worry about being distracted by her unresolved romantic relationships and is free to explore her relationship with Conrad. Jenny Han herself told Elite Daily that she approached the show with “fresh eyes” in adapting the story, and the ending would also be different than the books.

“I always knew how I wanted to end the books. But with the show, I went into it with an open mind. I wanted to approach it with fresh eyes and just see what sort of magic happened on screen. I am somebody who is always changing things up.”

The Summer I Turned Pretty is a story that touches on the emotional experiences of Jessie Conklin (Belly) and two brothers, Jeremiah and Conrad Fisher. The series is set primarily in the picturesque town of Cousins Beach. It explores themes of love, family, identity, and the sweet sorrow of adolescents growing up into adults.

The third and final season is dedicated to the completion of the stories of the brothers and Belly. By the penultimate episode, Belly goes on the path to independence in Paris, gets into a budding relationship with Benito, and finds her way into self-discovery.

At the same time, Conrad and Jeremiah struggle with personal issues and past mistakes, in particular, those related to Belly and each other. All through, The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 maintains a balance between romance and the themes of growth, forgiveness, and emotional maturity.

Notably, the showrunners have stated explicitly that the TV adaptation will not reflect the novels in its ending. Jenny Han has said that she would like to take new directions on the screen, which makes the finale unpredictable and interesting.

This artistic freedom permits the series to broaden the futures of the characters, such as the changing relationship between Jeremiah and Denise, and give his story a new spin, different than the one in the books.
