The Survivors, which premiered on June 6, 2025, unfolds as a haunting, slow-burning mystery that ties the past and present of the small coastal town of Evelyn Bay. The anchor point remains the two tragedies: the recent murder of Bronte and the mysterious disappearance of Gabby during a deadly storm. The storm also claimed the lives of two other boys, Finn and Toby.
The series slowly unravels as Mia and Kieran return to the coastal town with their daughter. Shortly after that, Bronte, who was probing Gabby's case, is murdered near the sea. Mia, Gabby's childhood best friend, senses the possibility of the cases being connected. The show suggests that some hidden truths are coming to the surface with full force, and the residents must be prepared for devastating consequences in the present.

The Survivors' ending explained: The truth behind Gabby's disappearance and Bornte's death

Years before the main events of the show, Gabby was a teenager who went missing during a violent storm. The prevailing belief was that she was swept out to sea. The truth, however, is darker. Mia eventually finds out that the person who killed Gabby 15 years ago and Bronte now are the same — Sean Gilroy.
The day Gabby disappeared, she was preparing for a party and wanted to buy some alcohol. Gabby wanted to go to the caves to see Kieran. Sean, who was well aware of the maze-like path of the cave, accompanied her. They didn't find Kieran, but they ended up carving out their names inside the caves. That is when Sean tried to kiss her. Gabby resisted and expressed her will to go home as water was filling the cave, and they needed to cross the maze to exit, which only Sean could do perfectly. However, her resistance upset Sean, and he stormed out of the cave without her. Later, Gabby drowned in the violent storm with no help from Sean.
Years later, Sean also had to kill Bronte because she was too close to the truth, which had been buried for years. Sean takes Bronte to the beach to click some photographs. Then, Sean shows her the images of Gabby's name in the cave, and Bronte realises that she might not be swept away in the storm. When she picks up her camera and turns back, Sean hits her with the flashlight.
The community performs a shared ceremony for Gabby and Bronte in The Survivors

Gabby’s death was the result of his aggression and carelessness in The Survivors. The only thing that could link the two incidents was Sean's desperation to keep it a secret. When Sean hits Bronte and tries to escape the scene, he sees Brian coming towards them. Brian tries to save Bronte by continuously offering CPR, but in vain. It was easy for Sean to frame Brian for the murder, as he was at the location where it happened. This time, however, Bronte could not be forgotten like Gabby.
Kieran and Sean had a fight again when Sean tried to kill him, but Sean was arrested and held accountable. Gabby's mother, Trish, was looking for justice, and she found some peace after his arrest. Kieran decides to live closer to his parents to take care of his ailing father.
The truth is revealed at the end. As everyone finally confronts the truth of that stormy night, the communal gathers to honour Gabby and Bronte in a deeply symbolic moment. They perform a shared ritual of release, reaffirming that grief is not meant to be carried alone. It brings together people who were once fragmented by silence and shame, especially Mia, Trish, and Liv. The ending of The Survivors also portrays why it is necessary to find concrete conclusions to such serious cases without leaving them unresolved.
