The intro song of Prime Video's latest spin-off series, The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, dubbed Freedom, has been one of its highlights. It perfectly sets up the mood for the show, set on a battleground. The soaring music track does not have any lyrics, but it is layered and quite theatrical. It begins on a quieter note and slowly builds up anticipation for the latter part, where more strings and percussion add weight to the composition.
The gradual build-up of its tone seemingly goes hand in hand with how the show builds its dramatic stakes. The theme is composed by Ruth Barrett, a British film score composer, who also worked on the Chris Pratt-led show, The Terminal List. Speaking about her score with online outlet, Goose Talk, Barrett said:
“This is a big theme in the show, which plays at a pivotal moment at the end of episode 1, when Ben crosses the line and commits an act of violence in the name of freedom that seals his fate. The music is epic and soulful — a solo string becomes an orchestra; it’s the passion inside him rising up despite the consequences.”
Lakeshore Records has made this instrumental theme track available online. If you want to listen to it all over again, you can find the YouTube link for the same below. While the music is important to the show's storybuilding, there are other reasons why fans may want to watch the series.
Let's explore some of those details.
About Ruth Barrett and The Terminal List: Dark Wolf
Ruth Barrett, who composed the music score for The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, has been working in this space for nearly two decades. She has also worked as a composer on shows like Law & Order: Organized Crime, Bodyguard, Sanditon, Bloodlands, The Decameron, The Durrells, and the recently released Prime Video series, The Girlfriend.
Barrett's work for PBS's historical drama series, Victoria, also earned her a Primetime Emmy award nomination in 2017. As said before, she has also composed the music for the 2022 show, The Terminal List.
Speaking about the spin-off Dark Wolf, the project brings Chris Pratt back as James Reece, but he is not the central focus of the show. Instead, Taylor Kitsch stars in the lead role of Ben Edwards, a Navy SEAL who gets abruptly discharged from his position. It leads him to start working for a CIA operative, who may not have the best intentions.
The show's plot synopsis, as per Rotten Tomatoes, reads:
"The Terminal List: Dark Wolf is a prequel series with an origin story that follows Ben Edwards throughout his journey from the Navy SEALs to the clandestine side of CIA Special Operations. The series is an espionage thriller that explores the darker side of warfare and the human cost that comes with it."
