The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox: Details about the murder of Meredith Kercher explored

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox is about Meredith Kercher, who was a 21-year-old British student from the University of Leeds, who had come to Perugia, Italy for a study abroad semester and lived with three other roommates in a four-bedroom apartment. Amanda Knox was one of Kercher’s roommates and was a 20-year-old American student at the time in 2007. The other two roommates were the Italian women, Filomena Romanelli and Laura Mezzetti.
On November 2, 2007, Kercher was found dead in her Perugia apartment bedroom and her throat had been brutally slashed. An autopsy also found evidence of sexual assault.
Knox recounted that during that day, she came to her apartment after spending time at her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito’s place and found the front door ajar, blood in her bathroom, and Kercher’s door locked according to Follain’s book. Knox called Kercher but she didn’t answer and Knox went back to Sollecito’s place.
Afterwards, Knox and Sollecito returned to the apartment again and found Romanelli’s window shattered and tried to open Kercher’s door. Sollecito also contacted the police and officers arrived. They found two phones in a garden and traced the devices to the apartment. Finally, a friend of Romanelli kicked the door and Kercher’s body was found.

On November 6, 2007, Knox, Sollecito, and Knox’s former boss, Patrick Lumumba were arrested and held on conspiracy to manslaughter and sexual violence. Knox faced a long and arduous interrogation without an interpreter and she signed a confession that put her at the crime scene.
Before Knox and Sollecito’s trial began however, another 21-year-old person, Rudy Guede was arrested in connection to Kercher’s murder as his fingerprints were found and his DNA was also present at the crime scene. His trial was held in September 2008 and Knox and Sollecito’s happened in January 2009.
Guede’s trial led to him being found guilty of murder and sexual assault by an Italian judge and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Knox and Sollecito still went to trial and had already spent two years in prison. The two were also found guilty of assault and murder and each of them were sentenced to almost three decades in prison.
On October 3, 2011, after four years in prison, Knox and her lawyers appealed and she and Sollecito were found not guilty. In March 2013, a retrial was ordered and Knox and Sollecito were found guilty again. Finally, on March 27, 2015, Italy’s highest court overturned the duo’s convictions as there was lack of evidence.
On the other hand, Guede served 13 years out of his 30-year sentence and was released in 2021 on account of good behavior. Two years after his release, a woman accused Guede of assault and his first hearing will happen on November 4, 2025.
