The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, Hulu's latest true-crime docu-series, features the harrowing case of 2007, where Amanda Knox was wrongfully convicted of the murder of her college roommate, Meredith Kercher.
Episode 3 was another brutal hour for Amanda, where she was taken into an Italian prison and put behind bars with people who barely spoke her language. The rigorous investigations, the false narratives, and her Global character assassination all pointed fingers at the incompetent Italian law enforcement.
Aptly titled as The Guardian of Perugia, The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox Episode 3 spends an unusual amount of time on Giuliano Mignini, the prosecutor who essentially dragged Amanda to prison.
Seeds of misogyny and an unexplained discrimination towards the opposite gender were sown early in Mignini by his religious mother. After the death of his father, he was tasked to become the man of the house, which developed an innate need to provide security within him.
In addition, his time as a police officer was marked by a ritualistic killer called the Monster of Florence, who only targeted couples. Mignini's love for Perugia transformed into an obsession to catch the serial killer and free his city from crime. In Amanda, he saw a means to fulfil his purpose.
Here is the complete recap of The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox Episode 3.
The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox Episode 3 recap: Amanda's grief intensifies in prison
Following her confession in Episode 2 (which was forcefully pulled out of her), Amanda is taken to the Cappane prison, where she meets another antagonistic figure in Warden Banti. The warden's perverted and sick interrogation strips Amanda of more than just her clothes, and she is made to feel even more unsafe inside that closed space.
Amanda takes this moment to realise and grieve over Meredith's death and how they were starting to become friends. For the first time since her death, Amanda takes a moment to reflect on their budding friendship, recalling how they would talk about boys, ear piercings, fake tattoos, and other things. However, Amanda's mourning is interrupted by even more perverted interrogation, and her time in prison officially begins.
Edda finally manages to secure a meeting with her daughter in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox Episode 3, but their conversation is recorded. After the police hear Amanda say that they owe her an apology, she is branded cold and arrogant by the Italian law enforcement.
The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox Episode 3 recap: The Guardian of Perugia
Through flashbacks about Mignini's early life in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox Episode 3, we learn why he is so obsessed with Amanda Knox's case and his sense of false justice.
Fueled by his perverted sense of justice, Mignini began to think that he was God's messenger sent to free Perugia of crime when he was assigned Kercher's case. Episode 3 showed his desperation to find some evidence that would link the three people he had put behind bars to his case. However, when Mignini could not find any evidence, he began concocting one.
Mignini's desperation knew no bounds as he was due to present Kercher's case to Judge Matteini in just three days. Then, a small wound on Kercher's chin gave him a brilliant idea that Amanda was involved in a vile s*x game with Kercher and her two friends before the murder. He plotted how Amanda brought the two men to their apartment, who ended up killing her friend. In addition, when Luca Lalli, the coroner, said in a statement that he found no s*xual evidence on Kercher's body, Mignini practically got him fired for discrediting his r*pe theory.

While Mignini tried his best to contaminate the evidence in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox Episode 3, the police still did not have Kercher's time of death and a DNA match for the bloody fingerprint found on the crime scene. A chance investigation gave him traces of Kercher and Amanda's DNA on one of Raffaele’s kitchen knives. While the traces were too minor to be considered as evidence, Mignini planned a narrative around them.
Elsewhere in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox Episode 3, Amanda was given the devastating false news that her blood test came back positive for HIV. This was done to force her into giving the names of her past s*xual partners.
After a humiliating hearing, Amanda returned to her ransacked cell and realised that all her private journals had been stolen. Those pages not only contained the list of her past s*xual partners but her private thoughts, which were now scrutinized by the police in front of the world.
In the final moments of The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox Episode 3, Amanda finally opened the TV in her cell for the first time, only to see how Mignini's schemes had painted her as a 'Foxy noxy', an American Witch, and a promiscuous woman in front of the public.
The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox Episode 4 will premiere on Hulu on September 3, 2025.
