The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox: The Meredith Kercher case

On November 1, 2007, Meredith Kercher, a 21-year-old University of Leeds student, was found dead on the floor of her apartment in Perugia. The British exchange student shared her flat with Amanda Knox.

What followed was a series of interrogations and numerous forensic tests. Within days, Amanda Knox and her boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were under arrest. Another name that came up during the interrogations with Knox was that of Patrick Lumumba. Later, Lumumba was released due to a strong alibi.

Then came Rudy Guede, a 20-year-old burglar. His prints and DNA tied him to the crime scene. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the murder and abuse of Meredith Krecher. However, it was later reduced to 16. By 2020, the court ordered that he could serve the rest of the term through community service.

Despite doubts over evidence, both Knox and Sollecito were convicted. Knox got 26 years. Sollecito, 25. The trial was no less than a circus- sensational headlines, global attention, and doubts lingered. American forensic experts flagged sloppy police work and weak evidence. Still, both were convicted.

Knox walked free in 2011, after almost four years behind bars. However, her legal trouble didn't end there; it was only in 2015, Italy's highest court cleared her and Sollecito's names for good.

Following her exoneration, she returned to the U.S and completed her degree. Knox published two memoirs and Waiting to be Heard: A Memoir and Free: My Search for Meaning. Other than that, she hosted a couple of TV shows and podcasts.

Knox married author Christopher Robinson in 2020, and they have two children together. At 38, Knox is an accomplished author, host, activist, and journalist.
