Twenty years after her wrongful conviction, Amanda Knox is narrating her version of the story in Hulu's The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox. The latest true crime docu-series follows the November 2007 murder case of a British student, Meredith Kercher, and the wrongful imprisonment of her college roommate, Amanda Knox.

The first two episodes of the series followed Amanda's arrival in Italy, with a bright future ahead of her. However, Amanda's dreams were shattered when she and her boyfriend were arrested for the murder of her roommate in a very public trial.

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox also introduced another important figure in Kercher's murder case, Rudy Guede, a 20-year-old drifter who was acquainted with the women and occasionally hung out with them. Later, Guede was also found to be a prime suspect in Kercher's murder, after his DNA was found on her body. Knox and her boyfriend's prison sentences were cut short after Rudy Guede was found guilty.

More on this in our story.

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox: Who is Rudy Guede?

Rudy Guede was a key figure in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox and was 20 at the time of Kercher's murder. He was a basketball player and a drifter who had lived in Perugia since the age of 5 with his immigrant father. After his father returned to the Ivory Coast in 2004, Rudy lived with the help of his school teachers and priests, who clothed and fed him. While he was taken care of by local households, he was adopted by a wealthy family at the age of 17. He also played for the Perugia youth team in the 2004–2005 season.

While he was given a second chance at life after his adoption, he repeatedly skipped school and did not show any signs of making a career. After he did not show any interest in the multiple jobs arranged by his adoptive family, they asked him to leave their home in mid-2007.

Since Rudy Guede spent the majority of his time at the basketball court in Piazza Grimana, he started hanging out with two Italian men from the Via della Pergola 7 house. Guede was a known burglar who had a history of multiple break-ins. In The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, Guede was arrested in Milan for breaking into a nursery school, just days before Meredith Kercher's murder.

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox: What is Rudy Guede's history with Meredith Kercher and Amanda Knox?

Since Rudy started regularly hanging out at Via della Pergola 7, he also became acquainted with Kercher and Knox, which was the beginning of his involvement in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox. On 1 November 2007, the night of Kercher's murder, he went to a friend's house and later left for Germany.

After his fingerprints, shoeprints, and DNA were found in Kercher's apartment and on her body, he also became a prime suspect along with Amanda Knox and her boyfriend. Rudy Guede maintained that he had not killed Kercher and was in fact trying to rescue her from a 'shadowy figure' in her apartment.

As shown in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, Guede claimed that he heard Kercher screaming when he was in the restroom. Later, he saw someone standing over her body with a bloody knife. Since Guede's testimony did not match the scientific evidence found in Kercher's house, he was found guilty of her murder and sexual assault in 2008.

Since Guede opted for a fast-track trial, he was interrogated in closed sessions with no reporters and was sentenced to 30 years of imprisonment, which was later shortened to 16 years. However, Rudy Guede was released in 2020 and was allowed to complete his term by doing community service.

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox is streaming on Hulu.
