AMC has officially renewed The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon for Season 4 and its final season. The announcement was made during the show’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, ahead of the premiere of Season 3 on September 7. Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride will return as Daryl and Carol, with production already underway in Spain this month. Season 4 will consist of eight episodes and mark the conclusion of the European storyline introduced in the spinoff.

Showrunner David Zabel confirmed that Season 4 had already started filming three weeks ago. He described it as a “super-sized season,” calling it an emotional wrap-up for the Daryl and Carol journey abroad. This chapter of The Walking Dead universe shifts its focus to Spain, with scenes scheduled to shoot across Madrid, Bilbao, Galicia, Andalucía, Toledo, and the Segovia region.

Norman Reedus said the ending is very specific, and McBride called the experience “the thrill of a lifetime.” AMC Networks President Dan McDermott called Daryl and Carol “two of the most iconic characters in television.” He added that this won’t be the end of the road for them entirely—just for this part of their story.

Production on The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 4 is taking place entirely in Spain, with filming locations spread across Madrid, Galicia, Bilbao, Andalucía, Segovia, and Toledo. This setting continues the storyline introduced in earlier seasons, where Daryl was taken across the Atlantic and forced to navigate an unfamiliar, crumbling world outside the U.S. For the final season, AMC has confirmed that the eight-episode arc will serve as the end of this European stretch for the characters.

This version of Daryl and Carol’s journey will be wrapped up fully, but the door remains open for future appearances or projects involving the same characters.

David Zabel, who serves as showrunner, said the decision to end with Season 4 came after extended talks. The filming actually began three weeks before the announcement. He called the new season “emotional” and focused on completing this specific part of the arc rather than dragging it out further.

During the Comic-Con panel, Zabel sat alongside Reedus, McBride, Greg Nicotero, and executive producer Scott M. Gimple. They all shared enthusiasm for how far the characters had come and what was left to show in the final run.

Season 3 hasn’t aired yet—it premieres on September 7—but AMC greenlighting Season 4 ahead of that shows confidence in the series. The upcoming season will introduce new characters, including one played by Stephen Merchant, who makes his debut in the trailer released at Comic-Con.

In the clip, he says to Daryl and Carol:

“You’re looking at it, I’m it. You’re looking at the last Englishman in England.”

This hints at another shift in tone and territory as the characters continue navigating the European apocalypse.

Melissa McBride returned to the franchise in Season 2 after missing out on the first season due to scheduling conflicts. Her character Carol was reintroduced slowly, with hints about her search for Daryl back home.

Season 3 picks up with Daryl and Carol traveling through more unstable regions, still trying to get back to the people they care about. The show’s writers have used the unfamiliar European setting to explore different versions of the Walker outbreak and its effect on varied cultures and governments.

Dan McDermott, President of AMC Studios, called Daryl and Carol’s story one of the most “intensely human” ones told on television. He said the response from fans has kept the franchise alive through multiple spinoffs.

While Daryl Dixon will end with The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 4, it doesn’t mean AMC is done with the characters. Gimple, who oversees the overall Walking Dead universe, has said they’re always in discussions about where to take these characters next. Whether that’s another series, a movie, or something else, the possibilities remain open.

For now, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 4 will act as the closing chapter of Daryl and Carol’s European mission. However, both the cast and AMC made it clear: this isn’t a goodbye. It’s just the end of one part of their story.
