The Walking Dead: Dead City, starring Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, was recently renewed for its third season by AMC. The second season's ending in Dead City was everything that the show had been building up to. Maggie finally had the man who beat her husband to death right in front of her, just where she wanted him, and instead of getting the vengeance that had been her driving force for so long, Maggie decided to walk away.
She almost goes through with it, but a knife in his back, and she's hit with the realization that even if she killed Negan, Glenn wouldn't come back, and she wouldn't find peace. Maggie might've found forgiveness, but her son Hershel is far from this choice. He decides to leave his mom and instead stick with the Dama.
The second season ends at these crossroads of choices, and as we prepare for another season of this post-apocalyptic spin-off, here's an update on the third season of the show, along with a special new cast addition.
The Walking Dead: Dead City adds Lucifer star as series regular
Aimee Garcia, who played Ella Lopez on Lucifer and has been previously seen on projects such as Dexter and Supernatural, has been cast in AMC's third outing into Dead City with The Walking Dead: Dead City. She has been cast as a series regular, Renata, a charming leader who has the ability to win people over with her disarming optimism, friendliness, and lively personality.

Now, whether she uses her ability for good or not, we'll only find out once Season 3 premieres.
While Maggie and Nathan might've resolved their growing differences in the second season's finale, the war for control of Manhattan is still ongoing, and it's as complicated and harrowing as ever. The third season of The Walking Dead: Dead City will most likely take us deeper into the war while exploring Negan and Maggie's complicated relationship at the outset of Maggie's choice at the end of the second season.
Since the second season wrapped up in June 2025, the third season will most likely premiere sometime in 2027. Additionally, the third season will also delve deeper into the ramifications of Hershel's choice. If he continues on his crusade with the Dama, the third season might witness mother and son on opposite sides of the war, adding an even more interesting dynamic to the relationships.

When The Walking Dead: Dead City was renewed for the third season, it was also revealed that Seth Hoffman would be taking over for Eli Jorné as showrunner. Hoffman had been an executive producer and writer on Dead City for three years before taking over this season. Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan will join him as creative partners for another season of alliances and adversaries in the Dead City.
