Doctor Who Season 15 might have concluded on a surprising note, but the Whoniverse is only growing bigger with the addition of the spin-off, The War Between the Land and the Sea.

BBC dropped the teaser for the miniseries shortly after the Doctor Who Season 15 finale. The show revolves around an ancient species that has remained hidden in water for centuries. But when the species decides to emerge and interact with humans, all hell breaks loose.

The series is being headlined by Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Russell Tovey, with a few characters from Doctor Who reprising their roles as UNIT officers. BBC has not yet revealed the premiere date of The War Between the Land and the Sea.

The War Between the Land and the Sea teaser depicts the emergence of the Sea Devils, an ancient species that might remind the audience of Avatar: The Way of Water. After remaining in hibernation for a long time, the species comes out, wreaking havoc on the world.

With the entire population at risk, the UNIT is tasked with dealing with an international crisis. They must figure out a way to either co-exist with or combat the Sea Devils. The official logline of the show reads:

“When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing itself to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war.”

The five-episode series will premiere on the BBC this year and will stream internationally on Disney+. It stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Salt, who seems to lead the Sea Devils, and Russell Tovey, who seems to be heading the human operation against the species.

Jemma Redgrave returns to the Doctor Who universe as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart with this spin-off series. The rest of the cast includes Ruth Madeley as Shirley Ann Bingham, Colin McFarlane as General Austin Pierce, and Alexander Devrient as Colonel Ibrahim. Adrian Lukis, Vincent Franklin, Mei Mac, Patrick Baladi, and Francesca Corney will play undisclosed roles.

The War Between the Land and the Sea was created by Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies, who co-wrote the script along with Pete McTighe. Dylan Holmes Williams, who has directed a couple of episodes of the original series, has helmed the spin-off. Davies released an official statement following the release of the teaser, which reads:

“The excitement is beginning to build, as the Whoniverse expands. I can’t wait for people to see this magnificent cast in such a powerful, vital, epic story. Look to the seas!”
