The 8-episode Season 3 of The Wheel of Time concluded on April 17, 2025. The official synopsis for this season reads,

“After defeating Ishamael at the end of season 2, Rand reunites with his friends at Falme and is declared the Dragon Reborn. But in season 3, the threats against the Light are multiplying: the White Tower stands divided, the Black Ajah run free, old enemies return to the Two Rivers, and the remaining Forsaken are in hot pursuit of the Dragon… including Lanfear, whose relationship with Rand will mark a crucial choice between Light and Dark for them both.”

The synopsis further adds,

"As the ties to his past begin to unravel, and his corrupted power grows stronger, Rand becomes increasingly unrecognisable to his closest allies, Moiraine and Egwene. These powerful women, who started the series as teacher and student, must now work together to prevent the Dragon from turning to the Dark… no matter the cost.”

While The Wheel of Time Season 3 has deviated in a number of ways from the books, one thing that it remained faithful to was the introduction of one particularly important weapon. The famous Ashanderei made its debut this season but it got so little screen time that fans might have missed it.

Mat appears to be hanging from the Ashanderei in The Wheel of Time Season 3

Given the many changes that The Wheel of Time has made from the book series by Robert Jordan, it was natural for the fans to think that the introduction of Ashanderei was also omitted. However, that was not the case, and it would take a keen eye to notice the brief appearance that the weapon makes in the final episode of Season 3.

In The Wheel of Time Season 3 finale, as Mat meets the Eelfinn after going through the red door and feels terrified because he does not really understand what is happening, he nevertheless makes sure that he makes the best of the situation.

The events during this scene mainly follow the book and that means Eelfinn is shown to be keeping his promises. As he sends Mat back through the doorway from which he had come, he is shown to be hanging by his neck. At first, it seems that he is hanging from the door itself but upon careful observation, it becomes clear that there is a weapon on the doorway and Mat is actually hanging from that.

This weapon is the Ashanderei and this is the scene where it gets introduced. However, its appearance is extremely brief and given how chaotic the scene is, it is only natural that its presence goes unnoticed.

However, Mat is saved and makes a run for his life. While it is not clear whether Mat took the weapon with him, given the limited screen time he had after this fiasco, it can be expected that the Ashanderei will be brought into focus in the next season, if it happens.

While The Wheel of Time has not yet been renewed for Season 4, there are multiple storylines open that can be explored and one focusing on the Ashanderei is certainly one of those unexplored storylines that fans would love to watch.

The Wheel of Time can be streamed on Prime Video.
