The Witcher, the Netflix fantasy drama series created by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, was first released in 2019. The show has released three seasons so far and will release two more. Besides, multiple spin-offs of the show have also been made and released, including The Witcher: Blood Origin, Sirens of the Deep, and Nightmare of the Wolf. Thus, it goes without saying that the franchise has required quite a high budget to make multiple series and films.
As Redanian Intelligence reports, the franchise's budget has crossed $700 million and will be closing in on a billion dollars once the budget for season five is revealed.
The Witcher's budget is almost a billion dollars
If the budget of the entire The Witcher franchise reaches or crosses the one billion mark, it wouldn't be the first fantasy series to do so. Game of Thrones had also crossed the one billion mark by the time it wrapped its eighth season. But surprisingly, The Witcher might just be closing in on a budget of a billion dollars after five seasons, two animated films, and two spin-offs.
The show's budget hasn't been consistent from the beginning, but as Redanian Intelligence reports, Netflix has spent the most money on season four until now. Season five might prove to be more expensive once its budget comes to light.
The show is based on the novel series by Andrzej Sapkowski. It is set in a fictional and medieval land called the Continent. The show follows a Witcher, Geralt of Rivia, who has some magical capabilities and hunts monsters. Along with him, we are also told the story of Yennefer of Vengerberg and Princess Ciri, women who both become extremely important to Geralt.
According to Redanian Intelligence, the budget for Season 1 of the show was $92.1 million, which is equal to $11.5 million per episode. For Season 2, the budget had a sharp increase as it reached $176.3 million, or $22 million per episode. Season 3 had a budget of $175 million, approximately $21.8 million per episode, which is slightly less than that of Season 2, but the difference is almost negligible. Season 4 of the show has had the highest budget of $221 million, which means $27 million for each episode, which is a significant increase from Season 3's budget.
The Witcher: Blood Origin had a budget of $51.5 million, which is $12.8 million per episode, and The Rats: A Witcher Tale has a budget of $21 million right now, which is increasing as the show is not complete. The two spin-off series cost significantly less compared to the main series, but the total nevertheless comes to over $700 million. This is the total budget of the franchise without considering the budget for Season 5, Nightmare of the Wolf, and Sirens of the Deep, as their numbers are yet to be confirmed.
Fantasy shows undoubtedly require a high budget because of all the niche graphics, costumes, and settings they require. Besides, The Witcher franchise has cast actors like Henry Cavill, Liam Hemsworth, and Michelle Yeoh, who definitely don't come cheap. After the budget for Season 5 and the two animated films is revealed, the franchise will likely have a total budget of a billion dollars.
While Netflix has spared no money to make the franchise what it is, the next two seasons of the original show and the spin-off will hopefully deliver an experience like never before. The Witcher Season 4 will be released on 30th October 2025, and Season 5 is still under production and will most likely be released in 2026.
The Witcher is streaming on Netflix.
