The Witcher Season 4 brings something new and exciting to the series: Laurence Fishburne becomes part of the cast as Emiel Regis Rohellec Terzieff-Godefroy, or Regis for short. He is an attractive but enigmatic vampire who possesses a strong sense of morality with a troubled history.

In an interview with TODAY, Fishburne says that Regis is not your stereotypical bloodthirsty monster. He is clever, humane, and philosophical, and even has a penchant for a couple of cigarettes. He is one of Geralt's best friends and serves as a significant emotional function later in the tale.

Casting Laurence Fishburne as Regis is the perfect choice. Fishburne brings authority and vulnerability to the role, a person who is lethal but also very human. He is introduced in early photos and teaser clips to have fantastic chemistry with the returning cast, and it looks like this vampire could be more friend than foe.

Regis is no ordinary vampire, as seen in the books by Andrzej Sapkowski; he's a "higher" vampire, who is wise, ancient, and not governed by the thirst for blood. He reads novels, debates about philosophy, and even smokes once in a while. It's because Regis is peculiar and dignified that he's liked so much, intelligent but far from cold, powerful but mild.

Laurence Fishburne’s casting indicates that the producers of The Witcher sought someone who could portray both strength and warmth. He gives Regis a touch of dignity but also makes him appear human and accessible. From his take on Regis, we get a glimpse of a man who has experienced centuries but still holds to the idea that friendship and doing the right thing are most important in life.

Initial descriptions define Regis as a dark-haired barber-surgeon, making him a great new addition to Geralt's world. Fans have already glimpsed the early photos of Fishburne in character and immediately recognized that the show will see the darker and brighter sides of Regis, a man deadly when the situation calls for it, but also filled with emotions and pathos.

What Laurence Fishburne says about his character

In his interview with TODAY for Season 4 of The Witcher, Laurence Fishburne provided a thoughtful and earthy description of his character Regis's history. He framed Regis as a vampire who has only found peace after all the centuries of blunders, losses, and improbable friendships. Rather than a single great unhappy event that defines him, the show appears to be delving into the numerous small moments of anguish and goodwill that have led Regis to become a better vampire who prizes friendship over isolation.

Fishburne reminisced about Regis being a world-weary, wise man but yet a warm soul beneath his calm facade. He called him "a survivor" both physically and spiritually. Fishburne facetiously also said that he signed up for a fantasy series, but also seriously spoke about the emotions that connect Regis to Geralt and Ciri.

From what we’ve seen, The Witcher will likely tell Regis’s story bit by bit, through flashbacks, old memories, and conversations, rather than one single origin story. This style fits the way Andrzej Sapkowski builds his characters: slowly, through quiet moments and dialogue that reveal who they truly are.
