The Witcher has just made a very bold decision.
Henry Cavill's dramatic, deep-voiced Geralt in The Witcher Season 4 is being replaced by Liam Hemsworth. Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has been candid about what's staying the same and what's new.
This isn't an example of a classic: new actor, same character case. The change resulted in minor rewrites, fresh emotional scenes, and a Geralt who's slightly more forthcoming, someone who smiles, speaks, and displays his soft center a little more frequently.
The fans will continue to get the monster fights, political turmoil, and broody magic they adore, but the tone and personality of the character will feel slightly different. Hissrich explains that these changes were thoughtfully plotted, designed to accommodate Hemsworth's style, and assist the story in expanding in new, organic ways.
Lauren Schmidt Hissrich reveals the differences between Cavill and Hemsworth’s Geralt in The Witcher Season 4
Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, in an interview with IGN, assured fans, Liam Hemsworth's Geralt will not replicate Henry Cavill's take. Rather, The Witcher Season 4 will make Geralt change, both physically and personality-wise, as a part of the narrative itself. It will be explained in the plot of the show instead of acting as if nothing has occurred.
Hissrich told IGN:
“When we were looking at who potentially could fill the shoes of Geralt, there is a physicality that has to be present. You need someone who you can imagine can excel at these action scenes, who has such a physical presence that they could be both intimidating in the story, but also, Geralt has a huge emotional side as well… What I really loved about Liam's work that I had seen is that he was able to organically blend those two things… he was able to really carry this specific, I guess I call it soul.”
Hemsworth's Geralt is described to be lighter on the surface but heavier underneath. This is to say that he is slightly more welcoming and even comes close to smiling, but there is a lot of pain and depth in his eyes. Hissrich notes that Hemsworth adds more emotion and introspection to the role.
After all that Geralt has experienced: fighting beasts, losing loved ones, and being separated from Ciri, he's different. He's still the same Witcher, but his fights are no longer just for staying alive. They're more emotional, revealing a man who has endured a lot and is finally allowing some of that to seep through.
A shift in tone and tempo
The Witcher is not simply receiving a new Geralt; it is transforming the manner in which it narrates its tale. The showrunner, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, mentioned that The Witcher Season 4 and Season 5 were penned in one huge two-part finale. This allows the team more time to delve into the stories of each character without haste.
It will now become more personal, as the relationship between Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri as a family unit finally comes into the center stage. Liam Hemsworth revealed to IGN:
“I thought it would be a really great opportunity to dig into this very complex character that, particularly in this part of the story, is dealing with so much. He's not used to being in a place of doubt and struggle and fear.”
One of the simplest differences that one can realize is: Henry Cavill provided Geralt with such a deep and growly voice, which made the character seem mysterious, calm, and weary of the world. Liam Hemsworth, however, has another beat, not imitating Cavill, but introducing his own style. Hissrich and the writers have altered the lines and pacing to make the dialogue sound more natural to Liam rather than make him adopt the Cavill tone.
As Henry Cavill's Geralt frequently seemed to be a solitary fighter in the midst of anarchy, the character of Liam Hemsworth will be more attached and emotional. The number of random fights with monsters will reduce, and the moments illustrating the purpose of Geralt and the people he loves will increase. The battles will be as dramatic and vivid, only more emotionally charged. Hissrich emphasizes that they are not merely swapping actors; they are enriching The Witcher's narrative.
The legacy continues
It was not easy to replace Henry Cavill, who is one of the biggest stars of the show. Even Hissrich acknowledges that the change would have been a disaster had it not been managed delicately. Rather than having Liam Hemsworth imitate Cavill, she took the opportunity to narrate a fresh story. Hemsworth was working out to be as physically strong as the character requires, but is also introducing a new energy that suits the new emotional tone of The Witcher.
The team desires viewers to experience the same world but embrace its development. Therefore, they have changed the design of a few things and made Geralt a little more approachable in The Witcher Season 4.
