The Witcher was once supposed to receive a prequel series, dubbed The Rats, but some sources suggest that it may now get reworked as a narrative feature film.
The show, based on Andrzej Sapkowski's fantasy novels, has been one of the highlights in the streamer's catalog. Until now, the Man of Steel star Henry Cavill had played the ferocious lead, Geralt of Rivia. However, he won't be a part of the show's upcoming fourth season. Instead, Liam Hemsworth is taking over this iconic role.
The Rats happens to be a project that was rumored to have been filmed in 2023. However, a new report from What's on Netflix suggests that the same material will now be repurposed as a movie, with Haily Hall as its writer and Mairzee Almas as director.
While specific plot details about this adaptation may not be out yet, the outlet revealed what might be the logline for The Rats. It reads:
“Six teenage thieves must rely on their criminal skills as they plan the biggest heist of their careers against the most dangerous crime ring in the kingdom.”
Despite these reports, there hasn't been any official update from Netflix or the creative team behind The Witcher on this front. So, fans might have to wait to know whether these new reports hold. For now, What's on Netflix believes that The Rats or The Rats: A Witcher Tale will debut on the streamer around the end of October.
The Witcher season 4 might show Geralt stop being politically neutral

The show's third season followed Henry Cavill's Geralt experience more than a fair share of tragedies that led him in a different direction from Freya and Yennefer. For the fourth season, there will be another challenge in front of them. Per Netflix's Tudum, here's what it will be about:
"After the Continent-altering events of Season 3, Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri find themselves separated by a raging war and countless enemies. As their paths diverge and their goals sharpen, they encounter unexpected allies eager to join their journeys. And if they can accept these found families, they just might have a chance at reuniting for good."
Speaking about Geralt's arc in The Witcher's penultimate season, showrunner Schmidt Hissrich talked about how she would be compelled to choose a side, she said,
“His side is Ciri and Yen, and he will do anything [for them]. He will get involved in anything he has to get into in order to make that happen.”
She added a note for the fans of the novels:
“This is the beginning of what fans [of the books] will know as the Hanza. It’s the group traveling with Geralt for the rest of the books. This becomes his newfound family."
She further said,
“He begins to realize that he needs help to get Yennefer and Ciri back, and when you need to help, you actually have to give of yourself as well. So, we start to watch the Hanza build and start to see that there are some amazing emotional connections to come there as well.”
The Witcher Season 4 will debut on Oct. 30 on Netflix.
