Liam Hemsworth recently spoke about the recasting of The Witcher, where he took over the role of Geralt of Rivia from Henry Cavill, who previously immortalized that character on screen.
The Australian actor was the latest star to play this iconic part, and as a fan of the video game adaptations, he couldn't have been more excited to join the cast. However, his interest was initially overshadowed by a strong fan sentiment about Cavill's shocking exit from the show, since they couldn't imagine anyone else playing the part.
After nearly three years of being cast as Geralt, Hemsworth addressed this recasting during his conversation with Entertainment Weekly. He spoke about how he handled the fan sentiment, saying,
"There was quite a bit of noise, and I had to put that aside. It started to become a distraction. I dealt with that sort of thing in the past a lot and, you know, at the end of the day, I love making movies and I love telling stories and acting. I just don't want any of that to affect my way of telling the story that I'm trying to tell. I jumped off social media and the internet most of last year."
The Witcher star Liam Hemsworth opens up about the recasting
Before the EW interview in September 2025, Liam Hemsworth spoke about his casting through an Instagram post in October 2022. At the time, he said,
"As a Witcher fan, I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure.
He added,
"Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world."
Showrunner Lauren Hissrich spoke highly of Hemsworth in her recent EW interview based on her working experience with him on the show's new season. She said,
"The other really great thing about Liam is he takes this really, really seriously. I think he knew that he was stepping into big shoes. It was really important to him to have certain things [for] continuity — and also certain things that he could invent so that his Geralt could stand on his own two feet."
While the fans of Netflix's The Witcher may have some reservations about Hemsworth's casting, he seems eager for everyone to watch Geralt's journey unfold in season 4. In line with this, he told EW,
"The beginning of season 4 is pretty close after the battle with Vilgeforz. He [Geralt] is not in a good place at that point, physically. He's severely injured. Mentally, he's dealing with things that he's not used to, which is self-doubt and this frustration. Now all of a sudden, you're seeing the very human side to this person, but what you're also seeing is the determination to fix it."
