The Yogurt Shop Murders led to the death of the teenage girls, Amy Ayers, Eliza Thomas, Jennifer Harbison, and Jenifer’s sister, Sarah Harbison. In the years that followed, the case sadly remained unsolved.

On December 6, 1991, when police officers responded to a fire at the local yogurt shop in Austin, they didn’t expect the heartrending reveal of the nude remains of four teen girls, who had been shot in the head. One of them had also been assaulted. Officials immediately sealed off the area and investigations were soon underway in the hopes of quickly catching the perpetrators.

Based on witness statements and remains of the pistols, a few people of interest were rounded up. One of them was 16-year-old Maurice Pierce, who had one of the revolvers and was in a mall just eight days after the incident. Maurice mentioned that he was the driver as three of his criminal friends robbed and burned the store.

Maurice implicated 15-year-old Forrest Welborn, 17-year-old Robert Springsteen, and Michael “Mike” Scott, further stating that Forrest had the weapon on the day. Maurice even wore a wire to implicate his friends but the conversation between Maurice and Forrest led to nothing.

HBO’s The Yogurt Shop Murders goes in-depth and looks at this unfortunate case and how the authorities failed to find the perpetrator.

Once it was ascertained that Maurice’s weapon was the murder weapon and as there were was no evidence regarding the four males, the police looked at new leads. The case changed hands in 1994 and a breakthrough only came in 1999. Finally, Pierce, Welborn, Scott, and Springsteen, were arrested for the homicide in the yogurt shop.

There was no new evidence but the police believed in these four as being the culprits based on circumstantial evidence. Michael confessed to the crime and then Robert also followed. However, they later changed their statements as they mentioned that they had been forced to confess. Forrest Welborn never confessed and kept mentioning that he was innocent. A jury could not indict him twice and he was let go. Maurice was also released.

Maurice did not face a day in court but he remained a suspect till his last breath in December 23, 2010. According to records, two officers, Frank and Bradley, conducted a routine traffic stop on the vehicle driven by him and he fled the scene. During a pursuit, Maurice and Frank got into a fight, until Maurice pulled out a knife and slashed an officer. In response, the officer shot him. Maurice died from the gunshot.

On the other hand, Forrest Welborn has always remained away from the limelight due to privacy reasons. He currently resides in Manchaca, Texas, where he has family of his own and his loved ones. Forrest Welborn has therefore tried his best to remain away from the case.
