The HBO Harry Potter television series, which is scheduled to be released in 2027, is directed by Mark Mylod. But the first director who brought the wizarding world to our screens was Chris Columbus. He directed the first two Harry Potter films and produced the third.

Now that a Harry Potter TV series is getting made, when asked if Columbus would like to be involved in it, he told Variety that he has done what he wanted to do regarding the franchise, and there's nothing more he has left to contribute.

Chris Columbus on the Harry Potter television series

Harry Potter existed only in the books until it was made into the first feature film, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, which was directed by Chris Columbus. Columbus had a vision, and luckily the films of the franchise that came after the ones he directed did not disappoint either.

If you grew up watching the films, you most likely have an attachment to them. Some might even wonder if Chris Columbus would be part of the show's creative team in the future. Well, it looks like he won't be. When he was promoting Thursday Murder Club in London, Columbus spoke to Variety about the television series, saying,

“No, I’ve done it, you saw my version,”
“There’s nothing left for me to do in the world of Potter."

However, he is happy about the television series getting made, as it will help bring many small details of the book to the screen, which the films couldn't. The films had a time constraint, which made it difficult for them to incorporate every detail from the books. But the television series will have the opportunity to portray characters and plotlines the films didn't get to.

As Columbus said,

"The great thing about it is that with the first and second and third book, we wanted to do it all. We wanted to bring all of that onto the screen, and we didn’t have the opportunity,”

For instance, as Columbus pointed out, the character of Peeves from the first novel

“never made it into the film — we just didn’t have time to develop the character,"

He also mentioned the incident of Harry and Hermione from the books where they were drank potions while being concerned they might be poisoned. Chris Columbus added,

"We could never get that incredible scene into the film, and I’m sure it’ll be in the HBO series. So for me, it’s an opportunity to bring all those scenes to life,”

While Chris Columbus does not want to be a part of the creative team behind the upcoming show, he only has good things to say about it. It is evident from his words that while he no longer wants to do anything new with the franchise, he is looking forward to what the show brings to the table. He is proud of his work but is simultaneously rooting for the show to bring the books to life in a much more detailed way.

Chris Columbus also said that when he saw the pictures of Dominic Mclaughlin (who plays Harry) and Nick Frost (who plays Hagrid) filming for the show, he was immediately reminded of Daniel Radcliffe and Robbie Coltrane. Columbus explained,

"Because it was exactly where we were 20 years ago!”

He continued,

“We had to shoot it on a Sunday with Dan (Radcliffe) and Martin Bayfield, who stood in for Robbie Coltrane."

Like long-time fans, Chris Columbus also feels that the show has more opportunity to portray the books in detail. While he doesn't have anything to contribute to the franchise professionally, he is happy that the show is getting made and has only encouraging things to say about it.

All Harry Potter films are streaming on Max and Peacock. The Harry Potter television series will be released in 2027.
