The Office fans still feel that the sitcom lost its charm after Michael Scott's (Steve Carell) exit in season 7.

Michael Scott was the eccentric boss and the regional manager of the Dunder Mifflin Scranton Branch and is one of the most famous and fan-favorite characters in the sitcom universe.

His exit in season 7 was hard on fans, but the sitcom continued its run for two more seasons, even after Carell's exit. However, many fans still think that the show lost its charm and the comedic streak that Carell's character brought to the show.

However, Carell's co-star and friend Jenna Fischer (Pam Beesly) does not believe this. In a recent conversation on Dana Carvey and David Spade’s Fly on the Wall podcast, Fischer revealed that re-watching the show made her realise that the sitcom did not lose its quality after Steve Carell's exit (as fans believe):

“There were still these amazing storylines.”

For the unversed, Fischer, along with her co-star Angela Kinsey (Angela), hosts the Office Ladies podcast, where they re-watch episodes of The Office.

More on Fischer's comments in our story.

Jenna Fischer believes The Office maintained its quality even after Steve Carell's Michael's exit

Contrary to popular belief, Jenna Fischer, aka Pam Beesly, thinks that The Office maintained its quality even after Michael Scott's exit. The sitcom fans believed that Michael Scott was the soul of the show, and it went downhill after his exit in season 7.

While the show continued for two more seasons before concluding, the fans felt that it lacked a key aspect of Michael Scott.

However, as Fischer revealed in the Fly on the Wall podcast, she thinks that the show maintained its quality and comedic streak:

“My biggest takeaway from having rewatched it was that it’s really good the whole time.''

She added:

“I think there was this lore, especially among the cast and the creatives, that maybe we hit our peak in Season 3 or Season 4.''
“And also this belief that the two seasons after Steve left, we were just treading water and maybe they weren’t as good. But when I watched everything, some of my favorite episodes were in seasons 8 and 9 after Steve had left.''

Steve Carell had earlier discussed his The Office exit on Jenna Fischer's podcast

While it was hard for fans to bid farewell to Michael Scott in The Office Season 7, it was an equally hard decision for the actor, too.

Steve Carell appeared on Fischer's podcast in 2023 and discussed his exit with co-stars Fischer and Kinsey:

“It was time for other characters to step to the forefront and other storylines to be pursued. I think it was the right… the timing was right...And the way those last two episodes were structured, it felt very rich to me to simultaneously be saying goodbye as Michael and us as friends in this moment of work together. But, yeah, it was a lot, it was a very emotional thing.”

While The Office was an ensemble comedy, Steve Carell's Michael Scott was the unannounced protagonist. While Michael's exit did pave the way for other characters and storylines to shine, his presence was dearly missed.

After Michael Scott moved away, the sitcom explored Andy Bernard's rise in the role of regional manager. The show also focused on Jim-Pam's marriage and the problems they faced, but the sitcom lacked that comedic streak.

However, Steve Carell returned to the series finale as a surprise to Dwight and became his best man for his wedding to Angela.
