Yoda is one of the more significant characters in the Star Wars universe, known for his treasure trove of wisdom and knowledge. The legendary Jedi may be small with distinctive backward speech, but it would be unwise to underestimate him.

Yoda was introduced in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back as a mysterious being who trains Luke Skywalker (played by Mark Hamill) on a planet called Dagobah, where he lived in isolation after Order 66 protocol was issued by Emperor Palpatine.

Before his self-imposed exile, Yoda had trained Jedi for about 800 years. He is known to have a deep understanding of the Force, making him one of the strongest Jedi to have ever lived. He would share wisdom with his fellow Jedi that is not just relevant to the Star Wars universe but also to real life.

5 quotes by Yoda in Star Wars that show why he is the wisest Jedi

5) “Anger, fear, aggression. The dark side are they…Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.” -Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi

Yoda tells his young Padawan Luke Skywalker that he must not get seduced by the dark side. He stresses that he must reject anger to fulfill his destiny as a Jedi and not follow in the footsteps of his father, Sith Lord Darth Vader.

When Anakin Skywalker, aka Darth Vader, was brought to the Jedi Council as a child the first time, Yoda was reluctant to accept him, as he saw aggression and fear in him. And his doubts were authentic; after all, Anakin got swayed to the dark side. Yoda is concerned that Luke will become like his father. Yoda tells Luke that embracing the dark is easier, but once on that path, it is difficult to turn to the light side.

4)Adventure. Excitement. A Jedi craves not these things.”- Star Wars: Episode V -The Empire Strikes Back

When Luke first appears on the planet Dagobah looking for Yoda, he was not aware that he was already in the presence of the legendary Jedi master. Yoda did not reveal his identity and watched Luke get impatient. His edginess worries Yoda, as he does not see him embracing the disciplined life of a Jedi.

But Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Force Ghost (played by Alec Guinness), who previously mentored Luke, requests Yoda to take Luke as his apprentice. Yoda points out to Luke that he doesn’t understand the hardships that await him on this path of life. A Jedi does not seek adventure. It is a life dedicated to the Force.

3) “The fear of loss is a path to the dark side. Death is a natural part of life. Rejoice for those around you who transform into the Force. Mourn them do not. Miss them do not. Attachment leads to jealousy. The shadow of greed that is. Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose.” -Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith

Anakin Skywalker (played by Hayden Christensen) had been having visions about Padmé’s (played by Natalie Portman) death during childbirth. These visions fueled his fear of loss, but it was a manipulation technique done by Darth Sidious. He is filled with anxiety and anger. Unable to make sense of his nightmares, he approaches Yoda.

Yoda shares that to become a true Jedi, he must let go of attachment and the fear of loss, even if it is a close person. These negative emotions ultimately lead him to the dark side. Jedi accept the circle of life to find balance with the Force.

2) “Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you.”- Star Wars: Episode V -The Empire Strikes Back

Luke is asked to raise his X-wing from the water, but after a few tries, he gives up. He feels that the starfighter is too big and his Force is not strong enough to lift it. Yoda tells him that size does not matter and to look at the Jedi master himself, who, despite being small in size, is capable of doing great things.

Luke walks away saying Yoda wants the impossible, but at the same time the Jedi Master suddenly pulls the starfighter out of the water, leaving Luke surprised.

1) “Always with you what cannot be done. Hear you nothing that I say?...You must unlearn what you have learned....Try not. Do. Or do not. There is no try.”- Star Wars: Episode V -The Empire Strikes Back

Regarded as one of the more memorable quotes by Yoda. While training Luke, Yoda emphasizes the importance of focus and commitment. Unlike other Jedi who start training at a young age, Luke began much later. Yoda insists that he can only channel the Force if he unlearns everything he has learned so far.

Yoda is also exasperated that Luke is not able to absorb Yoda’s teachings, as he is letting his limitations stop him from achieving his potential. To be one with the Force, he must let go and focus on his ultimate goal.
