Shark Tank investor Kevin O'Leary recently opened up about his views on the Trump Administration's controversial move to block student visas for foreign students who are studying at Harvard University.
He is against the notion and talking about the same with Fox Business, said that these students from other countries are important for America and its economy, as they stay in the country and contribute through taxes and job creation for the citizens. He urged both sides, Harvard and the federal government, to resolve.
Under the new administration, this policy is introduced to tighten the immigration norms and would effectively bar many international students from remaining in the United States.
Harvard decided to file a lawsuit regarding the whole matter as it undercuts the autonomy of academic institutions. O'Leary argued that international students have a lot of calibre and contribute to the American economy. He expressed,
"It's so clear as to what has to happen. The President of Harvard has to call the President of the United States, get behind closed doors, and work out a deal. But let me assure you something about these international students. I teach them. "
Continuing, he added,
"These are the smartest students in the world. Harvard is the oldest educational institution. These students are extraordinary individuals, and they don't hate America."
Shark Tank investor Kevin O'Leary calls for a resolution between Harvard and Trump
Kevin O'Leary, the Shark Tank investor, claimed that he has personally invested in two international students. He says that they have the drive and potential to contribute to the US job market. His solution for the entire thing is to vet the students before they join.
"I want to invest in them, I've already invested in two of them. These are the brightest and the best from around the world, and they are coming for the American dream," he explained.
As for Harvard, they claim that the policy creates a negative effect on their international student enrollment programmes. Critics like O'Leary say that this policy will not only disrupt academic careers but also send the wrong message to the world.
Along with that, the Shark Tank investor says that economic consequences are also bad for the country in this sense. He expressed,
"Now, Harvard has to talk to the President. This has to work out. When I go back there to teach in there in fall, I want the best and brightest, because I, along with millions of other investors, want them to stay in America."
Proposing a solution, he said,
"Why don't we vet them first? Check their backgrounds, clear them, 'You graduate Harvard, you're an engineer or whatever, you stay here, and you start a business here, and you'll get funded here and you'll create jobs here and that's why you came here in yhe first place.' These people do not hate America."
