Hawkeye star Jeremy Renner recently revealed one of the new reasons why season 2 of Hawkeye hasn’t happened yet. In the 2021 Marvel series, Jeremy Renner reprised his role as Clint Barton and teamed up with Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop to fight crime and evils from his past days when he used to fight organized crime as the vigilante Ronin.

While appearing on the podcast High Performance, Renner revealed that he was allegedly asked to return for season 2. However, he refused to come back as the experienced marksman because they offered him half of the money he made in season 1 of Hawkeye. He said:

"They asked me to do Season 2, and they offered me half the money."

More on this in our story.

Jeremy Renner opted out of his Hawkeye Season 2 role due to a pay dispute

Renner, who has been one of the main characters in the MCU since Phase One and has been in five movies in the Infinity arc of the Marvel movies, shared that he was being offered half the amount of money he earned in Season 1 of the Marvel series. He explained how it was insincere because the time and work that goes into creating a Marvel role will be just as hectic, but with less amount of money.

To add to his further comment, he said:

"I’m like, ‘Well, it’s going to take me twice the amount of work for half the amount of money, and eight months of my time, essentially, to do it for half the amount."

He further spoke about how his tragic snowplow accident might be one of the reasons for this disappointing decision. He mentioned:

"I’m like, ‘I’m sorry? Why? Did you think I’m only half the Jeremy because I got ran over? Maybe that’s why you want to pay me half of what I made on the first season.'"

The Marvel star further clarified that this offer did not come from Marvel but Disney. He stated:

"This is not Marvel, mind you. This is like, just Disney, not even really Disney. It’s just the penny pinchers, the accountants. I told them to go fly a kite. I mean, just at the insult offer. So we didn’t see eye to eye on it. Sadly, I still love the character. I’d still love to do it, but I had to defend myself."

He continued:

"I didn’t ask for any more money, mind you. Just pay me what I made the first season. So it’s all disheartening that that didn’t happen, but that’s fine. I’m happy to let that go, because my body’s probably thanking me, time and time again, that I’m not doing it right now. But we’ll see."

More about Hawkeye Season 2

The news about Jeremy Renner backing out of his iconic Marvel character is disappointing after Marvel TV head, Brad Winderbaum’s, revelation about revisiting the archer’s and his young protégé’s story in season 2. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Winderbaum had said:

"Hawkeye is another one that feels like you can make a second season of that show because it's Christmas, because it's Clint and Kate. You can kind of revisit it whenever, and we're looking for opportunities to do that."

With Renner passing out on reprising the role in season 2, and the recent behind-the-scenes production changes in Marvel might further delay the former Avenger’s comeback as Hawkeye. However, there might still be hope of seeing him donning the character again, as Kevin Feige revealed in CinemaCon that more of the cast members of Avengers: Doomsday will be announced.
