Netflix has no dearth of thrillers. It even offers a perfect mix of genres that makes for a great late-night watch. However, there's one show that might just be the ultimate late-night spy drama.

The Night Agent is as pulse-pounding as it can get. This is the late-night spy drama you didn’t realize you needed until you binged the whole thing in one sitting. It is created by Shawn Ryan (The Shield) for Netflix and is based on Matthew Quirk’s novel of the same name.

The show introduces Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso). He is a low-level FBI agent working the graveyard shift, monitoring a phone line that literally never rings, until it does. And everything goes sideways after that ring.

He’s joined by Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan). She is a brilliantly sharp tech entrepreneur whose life barely survives the mayhem. With that ensemble cast, shadowy villains, and sleek, modern espionage vibes, the creators deliver nonstop tension with heart.

Right from the beginning, the show ventures into big themes like trust, betrayal, loyalty, and power. It is about the extent of sacrifices you make for the greater good. It is about choices and the corruptness we are surrounded with. In the Netflix show, The Night Agent, trusting is a gamble.

And apart from all that action, you get to peek at genuine character evolution. Peter is wrestling with his father’s legacy, Rose is stepping beyond her Silicon Valley comfort zone, and then there is the web of moral grey that even the supporting cast gets tangled in.

Season 1 starts with Peter manning the Night Action phone in the White House basement. It is a really dull job until one random call from Rose about her murdered aunt and uncle launches them into conspiracy mode. Together, they find out about a mole at the highest levels of the U.S. government. They dodge psychotic assassins and go head-to-head with corrupt officials vying for power.

The finale of the Netflix thriller takes us to Camp David, where Peter prevents an assassination attempt, exposes massive traitors, and basically earns his spot in (literally) the big league of covert operatives.

Season 2 of this Netflix thriller ups the ante big time. Peter moves into the Night Action program full-time, and suddenly he’s going from Bangkok to New York, trying to stop a chemical weapons attack. He gets deeper into a dangerous broker-level conspiracy involving intelligence mercenary Jacob Monroe.

By the end, Peter’s in a tight spot. That cliffhanger sets Season 3 in motion with Peter possibly acting as a double agent. He is walking a moral tightrope as a spy within the very organization he’s meant to take down. He is also dealing with heartbreak, trust issues, and questions that get deeper than just survival.

Season 1 of this Netflix show racked up hundreds of millions of watch hours, and Season 2 even scored better in some critics’ circles. If you love Jack Ryan, but want it faster and more personal, this is absolutely your next binge on Netflix.
