Netflix has a big collection of action thrillers. But this gem is a hidden one, and it has all the ingredients of a good martial arts movie. The Brothers Sun is a fun and exciting show in the world of triad. At the heart of the show are two brothers who couldn’t be more different. Charles is a tough triad enforcer from Taipei. Bruce is his fun-loving younger brother living in Los Angeles.

They are polar opposites, with Charles wanting Bruce to learn the ways of the triad for self-defence. However, Bruce wants to be a stand-up comic. He hates violence and does not want anything to do with it. But when danger from their past comes crashing into their lives, the brothers are forced to stick together. That's where the story picks up. It is fast-paced and full of action sequences as well as hilarious moments.

The story works so well because of the cast. Michelle Yeoh steals the spotlight as Mama Sun. She is the mother of the two brothers and portrays a fearless matriarch who is not just looking out for her family but also hiding her own layers. Justin Chien brings grit to Charles, and Sam Li gives Bruce a goofy charm that is much needed in the otherwise action-heavy drama. You will also find pleasant and heartfelt family moments in the show.

It is no surprise that The Brothers Sun has earned an 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics and fans agree that it’s fun, original, and surprisingly touching.

The Brothers Sun really knows the right balance between heavy action and those little heartwarming family moments. The fight scenes do not feel forced and are well-choreographed. It is enough to keep you engaged and probably even on the edge of your seats, wondering what might happen next.

Charles is the dutiful older son who protects his family even if that means giving up pieces of his own life. He loves baking, but because of his family ties and responsibilities, he keeps that dream aside.

Bruce is like the marshmallow of the Netflix show. He would rather be cracking jokes on stage than dodging bullets in L.A. His cluelessness amid all the mess is both hilarious and heartbreaking. You feel for him because he never asked for any of this. He did not even know his family's truth until later.

And of course, Mama Sun shines in this Netflix show. At first, she looks like a caring and gentle mother. Until, of course, you realize she is the brains behind it all. She is strong and clever, and needs nobody to protect her, though her son insists. Mama Sun knows her way through everything. She also knows exactly how to push her sons in different ways. She teaches Bruce to toughen up and reminds Charles that he doesn’t have to embrace that gritty life.

By the time of the finale, you are all in to know if this family will make it out together. The action is thrilling, but Bruce asking himself who he really wants to be in the middle of all that, is quite resonating. Netflix has pulled off something rare here. They have made a series that’s violent and funny, but also warm and human.
