The character of Luthen Rael was not one that was very popular among fans of the show as well, since he always seemed to have a shady side to him which made him very difficult to trust. Most fans were convinced that the character was not faithful to the Rebellion and only used it to further his agenda.

However, with his death in Season 2, the story cemeneted a place of respect for the character in the heart of the fans, as Rael proved his allegiance to the Rebellion by sacrificing his life for the same.

Luthen Rael's death in Andor is his ultimate act of commitment towards the Rebellion

In the episode, Luthen Rael's moment of ultimate sacrifice is one that leaves fans in complete shock. When Dedra Meero comes to his shop pretending to be a paying customer, Rael picks up a ceremonial dagger under the guise of showing it to her. However, when she reveals her actual motives, Rael simply tells her that she is too late and drives the dagger into his chest as he turns his back to her.

By doing so, he ensures that he cannot be taken into the Empire for any form of questioning, and therefore cannot reveal the location of many important assets for the Rebellion. This in itself makes Luthen Rael's death his ultimate act of allegiance towards the Rebellion, even if he may have seemed a manipulative old man throughout Season 1 and a good portion of Season 2 as well.

However, Rael's misery is stretched out, as he does not die immediately in this scene. Dedra Meero takes him to the hospital soon after he drives the dagger into his chest, where he is kept alive on life support. Rael is, however, soon put out of his misery by Kleya, played by Elizabeth Dulau, who creates a distraction in the hospital and enters Rael's room to turn off all the machines that were keeping him alive. She has tears streaming down her face while she does this, proving his allegiance to the Rebellion once and for all.

Although many say that they are willing to die for the Rebellion, Luthen Rael proved that his money is where his mouth is in his final act of sacrifice on Andor.
