Since HBO's The Pitt inception, Noah Wyle's Dr. Robby has always been in charge of the room and his fellow doctors, and his leadership has been hard to miss. It was only after Shawn Hatosy's Dr. Abbot arrived in Episode 12, that we saw another strong presence in the hospital, one specially trained to handle mass casualties.

Dr. Abbot was first introduced in Episode 1, where Robby talked him out of jumping off the roof. Like Dr. Robby, he was also dealing with a personal loss, of his wife, and his challenging profession has taken a toll on him.

After the mass shooting event in the medical procedural, Dr. Abbot returns to help the understaffed hospital, given his military background, and he commands the room and handles all the patients effortlessly.

However, the final moments of the finale reveal that Dr. Abbot is a single amputee who uses a prosthetic leg, and he likely lost it while in the military.

More on Dr. Abbot's big reveal in The Pitt finale in our story.

Dr. Abbot's big reveal in The Pitt finale hints at major character development in Season 2

Considering Dr. Abbot's past as a military medic, it was natural for the show to bring him back in a crisis situation, but nobody saw his reveal coming. Fans were likely surprised to learn that Dr. Abbot is a single amputee and uses a prosthetic leg, because of how effortlessly he concluded his shift in the hospital, standing on his legs the whole time.

But the timing of this reveal makes his character even stronger. Dr. Abbot only arrives in Episode 12 to help his understaffed hospital and immediately commands the room. From ensuring they have enough supplies to treating the patients, Dr. Abbot instantly comes across as a professional with experience and high skills.

The big reveal in the end does not generate sympathy in the audience; instead, it makes them feel even more admiration for the character. In addition, assuming that Dr. Abbot will be a part of The Pitt Season 2, his character might take a more vulnerable approach in the sophomore season, revealing his backstory in the military.

Season 1's format left little room for the show to explore its characters fully, but the reveal hints that Dr. Abbot's vulnerabilities and his backstory will be a focal point in the upcoming season.

Shawn Hatosy opens up about his character's big reveal in The Pitt finale

While many would not have seen the reveal coming, Hatosy knew Dr. Abbot's reveal from the beginning, as he told Us Weekly:

“I knew from the beginning. This revelation at the end is a big surprise to many of our characters who just met Abbot that day. But it's also a big surprise for the audience.”

Hatosy was content with the timing of his character's reveal because it does not garner the audience's sympathy. Since Dr. Abbot started in an emotional state, we see him turning that personality around, and acting like a professional, who saves the day in the end.

Talking to TV Line, Hatosy discussed his character and his big reveal in The Pitt:

''It reminds us that the injury doesn’t define him; what defines him is his strength, his abilities, his presence and the quiet command that he brings to every moment. He’s the guy that you want in the room when everything’s failing, and the fact that he’s a single-leg amputee doesn’t have anything to do with that.''

This definitely opens doors for his character development in the future, and fans would surely be intrigued to know more about his military background, which will likely be explored in Season 2.
