This is why Elnor’s story ended abruptly in Star Trek: Picard

Star Trek: Picard gave us an up-close look into the lives of Romulans after the star in their system went Supernova. One of the characters that left a deep impression on Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) is Elnor (played by Evan Evagora). So much so that Picard would become a father figure for the young Romulan. While Elnor played a significant role in Season 1 and Season 2, he did not appear in the final Season, ending his story in the series rather abruptly.

Elnor was meant to be part of Picard’s new entourage yet he does not appear in Star Trek: Picard’s final season. The last season mainly focused on the reunion of The Next Generation and though it made sense that having Elnor would further complicate the story, the character deserved a closure. His story was left incomplete.

What happened to Elnor in Star Trek: Picard?

The Romulan Star System was being threatened by a Supernova in 2387. Romulans had reached out to the Federation to help evacuate their citizens, despite the centuries old animosity between them. Federation had initially authorized Synthetics to work on rescue fleet construction in the Utopia Planitia shipyard orbiting Mars.

However, a group of Synthetics suddenly turned, which resulted in the destruction of over 20,000 Starfleet ships and death of over 90,000 people. The Federation pulled back on their mission to rescue the Romulans and banned Synthetics. Picard, who was instrumental in carrying out the mission to help Romulans, would resign from Starfleet in protest.

Elnor is a Romulan who as a child was taken to the planet Vashti with other Romulan refugees. The Qowat Milat, a section of Romulan warrior nuns took Elnor in. Admiral Picard would regularly visit Vashti, where he forms a close bond with Elnor. Young Elnor is fond of Picard and looks up to him greatly. Picard will even bring him gifts and engage in some friendly fencing duels.

For the first time, the audience sees Picard interact with a child affectionately than ever before. However, as Elnor grows up, Picard’s visits become inconsistent. After several years, Picard would reach out to Qowat Milat to help protect Synthetic being Soji Asha (played by Isa Briones), who was being hunted by Zhat Vash. Elnor takes it upon himself to help Picard and his friends in Season 1. He does a magnificent job fighting off the Zhat Vash agents on the Borg cube referred to as the Artifact.

In Star Trek: Picard Season 2, Elnor will become the first Romulan to attend Starfleet Academy, showing the progress between the two worlds post of the events of Season 1. When Q (played by John de Lancie) sends Picard and his friends on an unwarranted quest in an alternate timeline, Elnor gets fatally injured. Although he is still part of the story, his role is considerably minimal. Nonetheless he gets resurrected by the end of the season.

When we last see Elnor in Picard finale, he is sharing a drink at Ten Forward, Guinan’s (Whoopi Goldberg) bar along with Picard and friends.

Elnor is nowhere to be found in Star Trek: Picard Season 3. While it makes sense that his presence would have complicated the storyline, a character who was so close to Picard deserved a closure. Also, with the introduction of Picard’s son Jack Crusher (played by Ed Speleers), an interaction between the two would have been interesting to watch.

Now that Elnor is a Starfleet officer, we'll have to wait and see if he returns to the franchise in the future.
