America's Got Talent Season 20 Episode 6: Simon Cowell presses the Golden Buzzer for a musical performance
The recently aired sixth episode of America's Got Talent Season 20 saw yet another phenomenal performance. It was by the Birmingham Youth Fellowship Choir. As the group members arrived on stage, judges were surprised to see the number of participants.
"Right. You've got quite the fan club in here. Okay. Let's start with first of all, hello and welcome, by the way, all of you," said Simon Cowell.
When he asked for the names, the Birmingham Youth Fellowship Choir's director, Ahkeem Lee, took the mic and introduced their group.
Simon then asked him to tell "all" about themselves.
"So, when I was 18 years old I started this choir. It was a fun idea. We wanted to get together to do a school supply concert to benefit the children in the community. But after the concert, we had so many youth that would walk up and say hey, how do I join this choir. I had to keep it going, and 10 years later we're here today," said the director.
Simon then asked why they decided to enter America's Got Talent the current year. He also asked him about their dream. Listening to that, the director, Ahkeem Lee, said, they all came from the city that is often criticized and "put in last of the list," he added:
"Birmingham has such a rich history, especially when it comes to history. So, for me, I grew up at the historic 16th Street Baptist Church. And a lot of people may know that church because in 1963, a tragic bombing happened there."
He mentioned how four little girls were killed in the bombing. He shared that they wanted to show how people from Birmingham had talented young people, and they wanted to do something great for the community.
The choir performed a fantastic performance. While singing, they also danced and seeing their cheerful performance, the audience was also quite excited. As their performance ended, everyone from the audience and all four judges gave the group a standing ovation.
Seeing everyone cheering for the choir, the director got emotional. Many of the group members also got emotional. Simon said that it was "big."
"I could see and hear how much work went into this. Every single one of you played the perfect part. We had lead vocals. We have emotion. And I'm so honored that you would come here on our 20th anniversary. And in return, I want to give you something."
Simon then pressed the Golden Buzzer, and everyone cheered even louder for the choir.
