In the Season 22 finale of NCIS, Timothy McGee, being part of the show since its season 1, is struggling to prove his leadership in the department. Being the oldest one in the department, he was the natural successor of Gibbs, which didn't happen. As Alden Parker's life stumbles into darkness with his father's death, amidst an operation. This leaves him shattered but also transforms his personality so that he might now become the true successor of Gibbs with the emotional baggage attached.
The finale offers compelling developments for the Major Case Response Team (MCRT), and the characters' existence in the department gets even more challenging. Keep reading to dive deeper.
How McGee is struggling to prove himself while Parker is emotionally ruined in the NCIS season 22 finale?
When Gabriel LaRoche is promoted to Deputy Director, despite McGee's long-overdue promotion, it highlights how McGee is being overlooked and undermined in NCIS. McGee was the one who first suspected LaRoche to be a mole and was on a classified mission to investigate the same, while others ignored it, purely on his gut feeling. But, in the finale, McGee is proven wrong when the team realises that LaRoche is on a mission to find the real traitor, but is not a traitor himself. This damages McGee's credibility and raises questions about his leadership.
But we cannot forget that McGee is the last original MCRT member and Gibbs' most trusted one, also. This sets him as his natural successor, which didn't happen. Season 22 now shows him doubting his instincts.
According to reports, viewers and critics see it as intentional ignorance towards an old character of NCIS. Therefore, the show needs to decide to rebuild McGee’s arc toward promotion, or risk writing him into a corner where his relevance fades.
On the other hand, Parker is supposedly replacing an iconic character of Gibbs in NCIS and is already burdened with huge expectations. However, Parker’s backstory with Carla Marino, a cartel leader who blames him for her son's death, culminated in the finale of season 22 when she kills his father, disturbing Parker to the core.
The show hasn't witnessed any crucial deaths since Clayton Reeves' in Season 15. It doesn’t resolve their feud, but it sets Parker on a path of vengeance and justice, creating a personal stake that makes him more human and relatable.
Therefore, the finale deepens Parker's character and positions him as a worthy emotional successor to Gibbs, now with a personal motif in place. However, for McGee, despite being the longest-serving stuck in a crisis of relevance, with the show uncertain about whether to promote him or phase him out.
