Noah Wyle's Dr. Robby emerged as a competent doctor throughout The Pitt Season 1, and nobody can question his professional capabilities as both a doctor and a mentor to his fellow residents.
Episode 3 of the show, however, explicitly highlighted Robby's state of mind on this particular day, as it was the death anniversary of his mentor and he is constantly battling with his mental health, even having panic attacks.
While Dr. Robby struggles to maintain his composure and demeanor throughout his shift, the cracks and flaws in his character begin to emerge, and he struggles to handle them. The Pitt does not aim to portray Dr. Robby in a perfect light, which is especially evident in his judgment in David's storyline.
David, a high school boy, whose mother was admitted to the ER following constant vomiting, posed an imminent threat to his female classmates. This incident of constant vomiting took place after his mother found a hit list in his notebook.
Despite the gravity of this situation, Dr. Robby decides not to report David to the authorities and even asks Dr. McKay not to do so.

Dr. Robby made a decision in poor judgment with David in The Pitt
David's storyline in The Pitt Episode 3 is inarguably one of the darkest on the show, as it highlights violent tendencies among high-school boys toward their fellow female classmates. Despite seeing David's mother's extreme reaction to her son's behaviour, Dr. Robby decides not to report the child to authorities or social services.
David's notebook, filled with the names of his female classmates he wanted to eliminate, was a ticking time bomb waiting to go off. As medical staff, Dr. Robby and his team had an ethical responsibility to take action against David because he was a potential threat to his female classmates.
However, Dr. Robby not only decided against it but also got angry at Dr. McKay when she reported the incident. This negligence on Dr. Robby's part further highlights his flawed character and arrogance, and how even a competent medical professional can make errors in judgment.
As Reddit user, u/Onehundredwaffles points out:
''...His character be incredibly competent but also having blind spots stemming from his own values...even for someone like Robby trauma will f*ck with your ability to function, especially if you don’t get professional help.''
What does Dr. Robby's judgment say about his character in The Pitt?
While David's hit list was quite severe and could have had a catastrophic outcome, Dr. Robby dismisses it to save the kid from further trouble. As he later discusses with Dr. McKay, he was only thinking about David's well-being, not about those around him.
But even after this understanding, he does not report David to the authorities or take any measures to help him, which highlights his own shortcomings and his battle with depression. Dr. Robby's error in judgment with David and his decision highlight how he needed professional help and measures to monitor his mental health.
Since The Pitt did not have enough time to explore character stories and psyche in Season 1, it would be interesting to see how Dr. Robby grows as a person and overcomes his character flaws in The Pitt Season 2.
