Trust K-dramas to weave swoonworthy romance through their second lead couples, who even end up winning more hearts than the main couple. KBS2's breakthrough K-drama Descendants of the Sun, which debuted in 2016, is one such example.
Starring Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo in the lead roles, the K-drama followed not one but two love stories rooted in duty, emotions, and careers. While soldier Yoo Shi-jin and Dr. Kang Mo-yeon's lead romance won hearts, Seo Dae-young and Yoon Myeong-joo's was equally popular.
Bound by duty to his country and Myeong-joo's father, Dae-young was unable to show his true love, but their romance triumphed in the end. The emotional depth depicted in the second lead couple's story and their will-they-won't-they love resonated with the audience the most.
More on the second lead couple in Descendants of the Sun in our story.
Descendants of the Sun: A romance bound by duty and longing
While both couples in Descendants of the Sun often found themselves in perilous situations, the second lead couple had an added layer of obstacles, which made their romance even more heartwarming.
While Dae-young and Myeong-joo had been in love for a long time, they couldn't be together because of her father. Dae-young was still a low-ranking soldier while Myeong-joo was a high-ranking military doctor, whose father was an Army General. A soldier with a lower rank was not acceptable to him as her daughter's partner, which made their relationship difficult.
In the K-drama, there was a constant push and pull between Myeong-joo and Dae-young. While Myeong-joo did not heed her father's command, Dae-young was bound by duty and discipline and thus maintained his distance from the woman he loved.
While Myeong-joo was expressive about her love, Dae-young silently endured pain because he, too, felt that he was not enough for her.
Shi-jin and Mo-yeon had their battles because of the former's profession, but this second layer of vulnerability and obstacle made the second lead couple even more endearing in the K-drama.
Descendants of the Sun: When love finally triumphed
This will-they-won't-they second lead from Descendants of the Sun were star-crossed lovers from the beginning. And Dae-young was not ready to budge even with Myeong-joo's constant pull and her many (unanswered) phone calls. He respected her father to a fault and was ready to give up on their relationship, even when he, too, loved her deeply.
However, sparks fly again when they both are posted to calamity-struck Uruk. Their proximity and the difficult situation added fuel to their chemistry, but Dae-yeong was still not ready to go against Myeong-joo's father's wishes.
While the second lead couple had less screen time in Descendants of the Sun, their love and resilience shine. Myeong-joo was not ready to give up her love, and Dae-yeong wanted to protect her relationship with her father, which is why he silently endured all his commands.
However, things changed when Myeong-joo contracted the M3 virus, and it was hinted that she might not make it out alive. Since the virus was severe and the medical team was not sure about its life-threatening effects, the future looked bleak for Myeong-joo.
That became the turning point for this second lead couple as Dae-young stayed by her side, even when he knew about the virus' contagion. Even when the medical team advised him against it, Dae-youg never left Myeong-joo's side and took no special measures for the virus to be with her.
Dae-young's calm personality and silent nature truly shone in that sequence as we got a glimpse of his undying love for Myeong-joo, which he could not show in the past.
The second lead couple in Descendants of the Sun ultimately got their happy ending after Myeong-joo's father accepts their love. They embody resilient and determined love, which eventually helped them win over the world and the audience's hearts.
