Star Trek: Discovery had a successful run for five seasons from 2017 to 2024, and established itself as one of the more popular shows from the franchise. The series follows the Starfleet officer Michael Burnham (played by Sonequa Martin-Green) and her crew members on board USS Discovery, as they uncover the many mysteries of the galaxy.
When the show was renewed for Season 3, Martin-Green shared that she was very excited to see the narrative move forward with more stories and new worlds to explore.
During an Entertainment Tonight Comic-Con 2019 interview with the Discovery cast members, Martin-Green shared her excitement for Season 3 of the Star Trek show. She said,
"It’s incredible because of course we’re almost a thousand years into the future right so we are boldly going where no one has gone before literally. And it’s very very exciting and exhilarating because we get to build this new world who are we now, where are we, and now who are we, so it’s exciting."
While talking about their experience with Trekkies at the Comic-Con, Ethan Peck, who plays a younger Spock in the series, said,
"It’s my very first San Diego Comic-Con so it’s wild I mean it’s just so surreal. And to be like injected into this world and plugged into this fan base is just something I never could have imagined."
Martin-Green chimed in,
"The love is intoxicating. Because there’s so much love and positivity. And then obviously you know Star Trek represents such beautiful things…such beautiful truths and so to be a part of it, to represent it, it’s an honor and we just sort of like we feel kind of faint with all the love."
The cast also shared how the fans know every detail about Star Trek and they must tread carefully and could not afford a mistake. Rebecca Romijn, who plays Una Chin-Riley, also referred to as Number One, said enthusiastically,
"You feel the pressure you know, and Ethan plays Spock and I play Number One from the original Enterprise series and you know to be stepping in someone else’s shoes also we stay very near and dear to the canon but we have to really honor these characters while taking artistic liberties at the same time…it’s terrifying. We don’t want to let anybody down."
The barrier-breaking show had several inclusive storylines. About an African American woman taking the lead in the Star Trek story, Martin-Green shared,
"I mean, I can’t even express what it means to me. You know we have so many elements of diversity on our show, and you know we’re trying to push that needle forward and keep up with the essence of what Star Trek is but just being a black woman at the helm of it and hearing from young girls especially, it makes me cry and I just thank God."
About Star Trek: Discovery
Star Trek: Discovery was created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman. The series begins before the events of The Original Series but later (Season 3) takes a leap into the future with Michael Burnham as the Starship USS Discovery’s commander.
The series follows USS Discovery crew setting on a journey to discover new worlds across the galaxy. The show reprised some of the legacy characters from The Original Series including Spock, Captain Christopher Pike (played by Anson Mount) and Number One.
One of the more interesting highlights of the show was Burnham’s origin story. She is Spock’s adopted sister who was raised on Vulcan. She became the first human to graduate from a Vulcan learning center.
The fifth and the final season of Star Trek: Discovery aired on May 30, 2024. The show ended on a bittersweet note with Admiral Burnham living a semi-retired life with her family. Martin-Green spoke about the ending in an interview with Variety. She said,
“…when I got the news, it was bittersweet and shocking. But I always felt a great sense of peace about it, and just gratitude and accomplishment and achievement.”
Star Trek: The Original Series was created by Gene Roddenberry in 1966. The series was cancelled in 1969 due to low ratings, but it went on to gather a cult following due to syndication. Over the years, the Star Trek universe expanded with comics, animated series, films, and spin-off television shows.
Star Trek: Discovery is available on Paramount Plus
