Three Pines is a mystery series created by Emilia di Girolamo, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video in December 2022. It is based on the novel series Inspector Gamache by Louise Penny. The first season's plot synopsis, as per IMDb, reads:

"Following Chief Inspector Armand Gamache as he investigates cases beneath the idyllic surface of the Quebec village, Three Pines, finding long-buried secrets and facing a few ghosts of his own."

The cast included Alfred Molina as the protagonist, Gamache, alongside Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers as Isabelle Lacoste, Rossif Sutherland as Jean-Guy Beauvoir, and Sarah Booth as Yvette Nichol, among others.

At the end of Three Pines, Gamache realizes that Pierre Arnot was responsible for Blue's death. Yet, instead of turning himself in, Arnot shoots Gamache and runs away, leaving the inspector's fate in the dark.

The inaugural season of the show had a two-part finale, titled The Hangman, which traced the final beats of Armand Gamache's investigation into the overarching case.

The finale also traced Gamache's strained relationship with his longtime colleague, Pierre Arnot (Frank Schorpion), who happens to be responsible for the Blue Two-Rivers (Anna Lambe).

Before that, the cops also realized that Mike and Angela, two former teen offenders, were responsible for the death of James, who was found hanging in the woods.

In the final moments of the show's first season, viewers see Gamache finding the evidence to put Arnot behind bars for his crime. However, Arnot suddenly decides to flee the scene.

Arnot does this after shooting in Gamache's direction and leaving him injured. In December 2022, showrunner Emilia di Girolamo spoke about this finale. Per Metacritic, here's what she said about Gamache's arc:

"It's about that moment of connection of death. I think we live in a way now where we don't feel that connection to death — where we shut it away. Having lost people very close to me in my life, I wanted to look at that. Louise looks at death in really interesting ways in the books, and I felt it was an important part of Gamache's journey, and how it informs who he is and how he looks at death."

Will there be a second season of Three Pines?

Three Pines will not return for a second season since the show was unfortunately cancelled after its introductory season and remained a miniseries. However, Di Girolamo wanted to bring another chapter in Armand Gamache's life. Here's what she said on this topic:

"In Season 2, we're not going to have a story that's about Indigenous people as victims. That's not going to be there. We will look at other aspects of Indigenous culture and have those characters there, but in different ways. And we will have a serialized story as well."

Yet, in the wake of the March 2023 decision, as reported by Variety, it was cancelled before it could highlight the topics and themes that the showrunner was hoping to explore through her work.
